My Grandfather Left Me a Diary in an Abandoned Basement — The Last Page Had My Name on It
CHAPTER 9
Maya realized they had been watched for days.
The unknown messages.
The footprints.
The mill.
Walter’s shooting.
Someone knew exactly where they were going.
Daniel checked his phone.
His face became pale.
“What?”
“My location has been shared.”
“With who?”
He showed her.
Sheriff Morris.
Maya stepped backward.
“You?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Daniel looked at the diary.
“Someone installed a tracker.”
They searched the farmhouse.
Under the kitchen table, they found a tiny device.
Maya felt betrayed.
But there was another possibility.
Someone had planted it before they arrived.
She checked every room.
Then found an old photograph.
Her mother.
Her father.
Samuel.
And Sheriff Morris.
On the back:
Trust no one who survived Haven.
Maya realized the truth.
The sheriff wasn’t working alone.
The entire town’s leadership had been compromised.
They needed outside help.
Daniel contacted a federal investigator he knew.
But before they could send the evidence, the farmhouse lost power.
A car stopped outside.
Then another.
Maya whispered:
“They’re here.”
Daniel locked the doors.
A voice came from outside.
“Maya.”
Sheriff Morris.
“Give me the diary.”
She shouted:
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather lied to you.”
“About what?”
Silence.
Then Morris said:
“Your mother.”
Maya froze.
“She’s alive.”
Daniel looked at her.
Morris continued.
“And if you want to see her, bring me the diary.”
Maya’s heart pounded.
“Where is she?”
“An old hospital outside Pittsburgh.”
Maya knew immediately.
This could be a trap.
But it was also the first real lead she had ever received.
She looked at Daniel.
“We’re going.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
Maya picked up the diary.
“I’ve spent my entire life believing my mother was dead.”
She looked toward the door.
“If there’s even a chance…”
Daniel sighed.
“Then I’m coming with you.”
Outside, the sheriff waited.
But what Maya didn’t know was that someone else was listening to the conversation.
Someone standing inside the farmhouse.
Someone who had been there the entire time.
