My Grandfather Left Me a Diary in an Abandoned Basement — The Last Page Had My Name on It

CHAPTER 7

Daniel refused to let Maya investigate alone.

They returned to the mill.

This time they brought copies of the documents.

Behind a collapsed wall, they discovered an old office.

Inside was a desk.

A chair.

And a tape recorder.

The machine still worked.

Maya pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then her grandfather’s voice.

“If you’re hearing this, they failed to destroy everything.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Samuel continued.

“Haven was never a development project.”

His voice shook.

“It was a cover.”

A second voice appeared.

Maya’s father.

“We have proof.”

Samuel answered:

“Proof isn’t enough.”

“We need the names.”

“They’ll kill us.”

A long silence.

Then her father’s voice.

“What about Maya?”

Samuel answered:

“She stays out of this.”

Maya covered her mouth.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“She’s the reason they started Haven.”

The recording ended.

Maya stared at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Before he could answer, the door opened.

An elderly man stood there.

“I can tell you.”

His name was Walter Crane.

He had been a former employee of Hale Development.

He told them that Maya had been used as leverage.

Her father had discovered that powerful men were using private records to blackmail families who resisted the project.

When David tried to expose them, they threatened Maya.

So Samuel made a deal.

He would take the blame for missing documents.

David would disappear from the company.

And Maya would be protected.

“But your grandfather made one mistake,” Walter said.

“What?”

“He trusted Sheriff Morris.”

Maya’s stomach dropped.

Walter continued.

“Morris was the one who betrayed him.”

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot shattered the room.

Walter collapsed.

Daniel pulled Maya behind the desk.

Another shot struck the wall.

Someone was coming through the corridor.

Maya grabbed the diary.

They ran through a side passage.

Behind them, a voice shouted:

“Give me the book!”

Maya didn’t stop.

For the first time, she understood.

The diary wasn’t merely evidence.

It was the one thing someone was willing to kill for.
