Adrian returned a week later.

He came alone.

“I want to apologize.”

I nodded.

“Go ahead.”

“I judged you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were weak.”

“Yes.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You really don’t make apologies easy.”

“I’m not trying to.”

He looked at me.

“Why did you let us humiliate you?”

“Because I didn’t need to prove anything.”

He stared.

“I should have known.”

“You couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because you only saw what was useful to you.”

He lowered his head.

“That’s fair.”

“Are you selling the company?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Why?”

“Because I want to compete honestly.”

That made me laugh for the first time.

He stood.

“Maybe I will.”

He left.

I watched him disappear.

The dinner had begun as an attempt to make me feel small.

Instead, it had exposed exactly who the people at that table were.
