My Ex-Wife Invited Me to Dinner to Humiliate Me — She Had No Idea I Owned Her Lover’s Company
Chapter 3
Halfway through dinner, Victoria decided to embarrass me properly.
She leaned toward Adrian.
“Daniel never cared much about success.”
Adrian glanced at me.
“Really?”
“He was always comfortable with less.”
I smiled.
“Perhaps.”
She continued.
“I used to beg him to think bigger.”
Her friends nodded sympathetically.
One asked:
“How did you two end up together?”
Victoria laughed.
“Bad judgment.”
Everyone laughed.
Except Adrian.
He studied me.
There was something calculating in his eyes.
“You seem pretty calm about all this.”
“I’m having dinner.”
Adrian smiled.
“Fair enough.”
Victoria looked annoyed.
She wanted me embarrassed.
I wasn’t giving her the reaction she expected.
So she tried again.
“Do you still live in the same apartment?”
“Yes.”
“With the same old car?”
“Yes.”
She looked at Adrian.
“He never changed.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Some people don’t need much.”
I almost admired the irony.
He was talking about me while negotiating a deal involving a company I owned.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from my chief legal officer.
Board vote moved to Monday. Adrian’s firm has no idea the acquisition terms have changed.
I typed one response.
Proceed.
Adrian looked at me.
“Work?”
“Something like that.”
Victoria laughed.
“You still work during dinner.”
“Sometimes.”
She turned toward her friends.
“That’s Daniel.”
I smiled.
No one at the table knew that my “work” involved deciding whether their companies survived Monday.
