My Ex-Wife Invited Me to Dinner to Humiliate Me — She Had No Idea I Owned Her Lover’s Company
Chapter 4
Dessert arrived.
Victoria ordered champagne.
Adrian leaned back.
“I have to admit something.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“I expected your life to be worse.”
The table went quiet.
Victoria smiled.
“Adrian.”
He laughed.
“I’m just being honest.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Victoria made it sound like the divorce broke you.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared slightly.
Adrian continued.
“But you look…”
He searched for the word.
“Fine.”
I smiled.
“I am.”
Victoria looked irritated.
She had expected tears.
Jealousy.
Anger.
Instead, I looked completely comfortable.
Then Adrian said:
“You know, I’m actually negotiating a deal that could change my career.”
“I heard.”
“It’s with Mercer Holdings.”
“Congratulations.”
He raised his glass.
“They’re difficult.”
“I know.”
He stared.
“How?”
“I’ve worked with them.”
“Really?”
“For a long time.”
Victoria interrupted.
“Daniel doesn’t know anything about large acquisitions.”
Adrian laughed.
“Right.”
I leaned back.
“Then you’re safe.”
He didn’t understand.
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Final documents ready.
I placed the phone face down.
Adrian raised his glass.
“To people who know their place.”
Victoria smiled.
Everyone clinked glasses.
I didn’t.
Because I knew whose company Adrian was trying to buy.
And I knew exactly what was going to happen Monday morning.
