My Ex-Wife Invited Me to Dinner to Humiliate Me — She Had No Idea I Owned Her Lover’s Company
Chapter 7
Monday arrived.
At 8:00 a.m., Mercer Holdings released an internal announcement.
The company would not be acquired.
Instead, a new controlling shareholder would restructure the company.
At 8:15, Adrian’s firm received the news.
At 8:20, the board received a second announcement.
Daniel Mercer appointed Executive Chairman.
The business press exploded.
At 8:25, Victoria called me.
I answered.
Silence.
Then:
“Daniel?”
“Yes?”
“What is this?”
“What?”
“This announcement.”
“I’m afraid you’ll have to be more specific.”
“You own Mercer Holdings?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
Her voice became smaller.
“How?”
“I’ve owned it for years.”
“What?”
“You knew I had a private investment office.”
“I thought it was small.”
“It was.”
“How small?”
I looked at the skyline from my office.
“Twenty-eight billion dollars in assets under management.”
Silence.
Victoria stopped breathing.
“You lied to me.”
“No.”
“You hid it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I answered honestly.
“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me.”
She started crying.
“Daniel…”
“I already have my answer.”
She hung up.
A few minutes later, Adrian called.
I answered.
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“I owe you an apology.”
“For what?”
He was silent.
“Everything.”
I smiled.
“Then apologize to yourself.”
“What?”
“You were so certain I had nothing.”
He had no response.
