Millionaire Sent Her $200K by Mistake — And He Never Expected What She Did Next!

Chapter 9

The abandoned mining town sat beneath a dark mountain range.

Daniel and Emma arrived just before sunset.

Every building looked deserted.

The wind pushed dust through empty streets.

“This place is dead,” Emma whispered.

“No.”

Daniel looked at the road.

“It’s hiding.”

They followed Elena’s map to an old warehouse.

The door was unlocked.

Inside was a single table.

A lamp.

And a man sitting in the shadows.

Emma stopped.

Daniel did too.

The man stood.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar along his jaw.

Emma knew immediately.

Her father’s face was in old photographs.

“Dad?”

Michael Carter looked at her.

For twenty years, he had imagined this moment.

Now he could barely speak.

Emma crossed the room.

She stopped inches from him.

“You’re alive.”

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“You left me.”

“I didn’t.”

“You let me hate you.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I came near you, people died.”

Emma cried.

“You should have trusted me.”

Michael looked at her.

“You were seven.”

She shook her head.

“I’m not seven anymore.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Daniel stepped forward.

Michael looked at him.

“James’s son.”

Daniel stared.

“You knew my father?”

“We worked together.”

“Did he die because of Victor?”

Michael hesitated.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What really happened?”

Michael told them.

James had discovered the charity network.

He tried to expose it.

Leonard Voss betrayed him.

Victor took over.

Michael was blamed for financial crimes.

He disappeared.

Diane helped him escape.

The two fathers continued working separately.

Then James was killed.

Michael kept looking for the ledger.

But there was one problem.

The ledger had been split into three parts.

One was hidden by Michael.

One by Diane.

One by someone neither family knew.

Daniel asked:

“Who had the third part?”

Michael looked at Emma.

“Your mother.”

Emma frowned.

“She said she didn’t.”

“She did.”

“How?”

“She hid it in the one place no one would search.”

Emma thought of the necklace.

“The pendant.”

Michael nodded.

“The card contains only the key.”

Daniel opened the laptop.

“What does the key unlock?”

“A bank vault.”

“Which bank?”

Michael looked at him.

“Yours.”

Daniel froze.

“My company bank?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Private vault under the original Whitmore headquarters.”

“That building was sold.”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“It was never sold.”

Daniel stared.

“Then who owns it?”

“You do.”

They traveled to the abandoned headquarters that night.

Daniel used old corporate credentials.

A hidden elevator opened.

Below the building was a vault.

Three locks.

Three keys.

The pendant opened one.

Michael had the second.

The third was missing.

Then footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Daniel turned.

A man stepped into the light.

Leonard Voss.

Alive.

Emma felt her breath catch.

Voss smiled.

“You finally found it.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

Voss laughed.

“I didn’t send the money to hurt you.”

“You sent it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor was about to destroy the ledger.”

Emma asked:

“Then why not tell us?”

“Because I needed you to find your father first.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You used my daughter.”

“I protected her.”

“You put a target on her.”

“I put a target on myself.”

Daniel looked at Voss.

“Where’s the third key?”

Voss smiled.

“Ask your uncle.”

Daniel froze.

“My uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas?”

“Thomas isn’t your uncle.”

Voss’s smile disappeared.

“He is your father’s son.”

Daniel went still.

“What?”

Voss looked toward the hallway.

“The third key is with your brother.”

Daniel whispered:

“I don’t have a brother.”

Voss replied:

“You do.”

And then the lights went out.
