Millionaire Sent Her $200K by Mistake — And He Never Expected What She Did Next!
Chapter 8
Daniel stared at Elena.
“You know who sent the money?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Elena walked to the window.
“You came here because you trusted the wrong question.”
“What does that mean?”
“You asked who sent the money.”
She turned.
“You should ask why.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why?”
“To bring you here.”
“Who wanted us here?”
“The man your father spent twenty years hiding from.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Give me a name.”
Elena looked toward Emma.
“Your mother knows it.”
Emma felt cold.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she was protecting you.”
Daniel interrupted.
“Who is it?”
Elena said:
“Victor Whitmore.”
Daniel froze.
“My cousin?”
“No.”
“Victor Whitmore is dead.”
Elena shook her head.
“You were told he was dead.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“Why would he fake his death?”
“To take over everything without anyone watching him.”
Emma frowned.
“Then what’s his connection to my mother?”
“Diane was the only person who could identify him.”
Daniel understood.
“That’s why she was protected.”
“Yes.”
“But why was she taken now?”
“Because she remembered.”
“Remembered what?”
“Where the ledger is.”
Elena handed Emma another photograph.
It showed Diane standing outside a children’s hospital.
Beside her was Victor Whitmore.
Young.
Alive.
Emma stared.
“My mother knew him.”
“She did.”
“What did he do?”
“He built the financial network.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And my father?”
“He infiltrated it.”
“Then why did he disappear?”
“Because he knew Victor would kill anyone close to you.”
Daniel sat down.
“This is insane.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Emma.
“This is what happens when powerful people believe nobody will ever make them answer for what they did.”
Emma thought of the $200,000.
“Then why send it to me?”
Elena smiled.
“Because Victor wanted you to find the ledger.”
Emma frowned.
“Why would he?”
“Because he no longer controls everyone.”
Daniel looked up.
“Someone else is moving against him.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Elena’s expression softened.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“My father is alive?”
“Yes.”
“He sent the money?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Elena finally answered.
“Leonard Voss.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“But Voss is dead.”
Elena laughed sadly.
“That is what Victor wants everyone to believe.”
Daniel stood.
“My father. Voss. Victor.”
He looked at Emma.
“And my mother.”
Elena nodded.
“They were all part of the same story.”
“Where is my father?”
Elena reached into a cabinet.
She pulled out a map.
A red circle marked an abandoned mining town in the mountains.
“He’s there.”
Emma asked:
“Why hasn’t he come back?”
“Because he is waiting for one thing.”
“What?”
“For the ledger.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“What does the ledger contain?”
She met his eyes.
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Everyone who paid.”
“Everyone who took money.”
“Everyone who ordered disappearances.”
“And everyone who was protected.”
Daniel stared.
“And if we find it?”
Elena whispered:
“Then half the city’s most powerful people fall.”
Emma understood.
The two hundred thousand dollars had never been about money.
It was bait.
A signal.
A way to bring together the two families who had been separated for decades.
And now they knew the ledger still existed.
They only needed to find it.
Then Elena said something even more chilling:
“Your father isn’t the only person waiting for you.”
