Millionaire Sent Her $200K by Mistake — And He Never Expected What She Did Next!
Chapter 6
The micro-SD card contained only one file.
A video.
Diane Carter appeared on the screen.
But this recording was twenty years old.
Emma watched her mother as a young woman.
Her voice was steady.
“If you’re watching this, the plan failed.”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
Her mother continued.
“Emma was supposed to be moved with the others.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Mothers and children were being relocated.”
“Not because they were criminals.”
“Because someone was hunting them.”
The video showed photographs of women.
Different cities.
Different names.
But the same organization appeared repeatedly.
Northbridge Relief.
Then Diane said:
“Your father found the money trail.”
“He discovered that the charity was being used to launder money.”
“James Whitmore helped him.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“My father knew.”
Diane continued:
“The two men planned to expose everything.”
“Then someone found out.”
A photograph appeared.
Michael Carter.
James Whitmore.
Standing beside a third man.
Leonard Voss.
Emma stared.
“Voss was there.”
Daniel nodded.
Diane’s voice continued.
“Your father trusted him.”
Then the recording stopped.
Another video opened automatically.
This one was from James Whitmore.
Daniel’s father.
“If Daniel ever sees this…”
Daniel froze.
“I want him to know I didn’t leave him anything because I wanted him rich.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I left him a chance to fix what I couldn’t.”
The video continued.
“Voss is not working alone.”
“There’s someone inside the Whitmore company.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
“Who?”
His father said:
“Someone who knows every account.”
Then the recording ended.
A final encrypted file appeared.
Password required.
Emma stared at the screen.
“How do we open it?”
Daniel thought.
“The pendant.”
“What?”
“The symbol.”
He checked the necklace.
The tree symbol had three branches.
Three numbers were etched into the back.
7-4-2.
He entered them.
The file opened.
Inside was a spreadsheet.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one shocking line.
Diane Carter — Protected Asset
Emma whispered:
“Protected asset?”
Daniel scrolled.
Next to her mother’s name was a note:
Do not terminate. She possesses the original record.
Emma stared.
“What original record?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He was looking farther down the list.
There were several names highlighted.
One belonged to Daniel’s father.
Another belonged to Emma’s father.
A third belonged to…
Daniel himself.
Emma stared.
“Why is your name here?”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I was twelve.”
The note beside his name said:
Future control subject.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel didn’t know.
Then Emma saw another name.
Thomas Whitmore.
“Who is Thomas?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“My uncle.”
“You have an uncle?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“He disappeared fourteen years ago.”
Emma looked at him.
“Do you think he’s alive?”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Yes.”
A new message appeared on the screen.
He never disappeared.
Another line followed.
He became the one running everything.
Daniel stood.
“My uncle.”
Emma shook her head.
“Could he be the person who sent the money?”
“Maybe.”
“Then why $200,000?”
Daniel looked at the original transaction.
“Because that amount was just large enough to force an investigation.”
Emma stared.
“He wanted us to find the network.”
Daniel nodded.
“So someone on the inside wants the truth exposed.”
The front door opened.
A security guard rushed inside.
“Mr. Whitmore!”
Daniel turned.
“What happened?”
“Someone breached the cameras.”
“When?”
“Five minutes ago.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
They heard a car engine outside.
He grabbed the laptop.
“Move.”
They ran through the rear entrance.
A black SUV accelerated toward them.
Daniel pulled Emma aside.
The vehicle hit the front gate and disappeared.
A message appeared on the laptop screen.
STOP LOOKING FOR YOUR FATHERS.
Then:
LOOK FOR THE WOMAN THEY PROTECTED.
Emma turned pale.
“What woman?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I think we know.”
They returned to Diane.
Her mother was gone.
