Chapter 14

Two years later, the Carter-Whitmore Foundation had helped thousands of people.

Diane recovered enough to live independently.

Michael finally moved back home.

Thomas and David became part of Daniel’s executive team.

Sarah retired.

The old hospital archive was converted into a public research center.

And the anonymous phone number that had started everything became the foundation’s emergency hotline.

Emma answered calls herself sometimes.

One winter night, the phone rang at 2:13 a.m.

A frightened woman said:

“I don’t know where to go.”

Emma answered:

“You called the right number.”

She looked at Daniel across the room.

He smiled.

The past had become something useful.

Something no longer controlled them.

That spring, Daniel took Emma to a lakeside estate.

She thought it was another foundation meeting.

Instead, there were candles.

Flowers.

Her mother.

His brothers.

Michael.

A small group of close friends.

Daniel walked toward her.

“You lied to me.”

“I did.”

“You said this was work.”

“It is.”

“What work?”

He took her hands.

“The rest of my life.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

Daniel knelt.

She laughed through them.

“I’ve never been good at asking for things.”

“You’re a billionaire.”

“That doesn’t help.”

She shook her head.

He opened a small box.

Inside was a simple ring.

“Emma Carter, you returned two hundred thousand dollars.”

She laughed.

“You still talk about that?”

“I will forever.”

He continued.

“You returned money when keeping it could have changed your life.”

“You also changed mine.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t want you because you are honest.”

He smiled.

“I want you because you make me want to be better.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

“Will you marry me?”

She looked around.

Everyone was crying.

Even Thomas.

Emma smiled.

“Yes.”

Daniel stood.

She kissed him.

Later, they sat beside the lake.

Emma asked:

“Do you ever think about that first day?”

“Every day.”

“What would you do differently?”

“Nothing.”

“Not even the $200,000?”

“Especially not the $200,000.”

She leaned against him.

“I still think that was the strangest bank mistake in history.”

Daniel smiled.

“It wasn’t a mistake.”

She looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

He reached into his pocket.

He still carried a copy of the original transfer.

On the bottom was a tiny code.

Emma had never noticed it.

“Thomas sent the money intentionally.”

“I know.”

“Look closer.”

She did.

The code was three letters.

J.W.

Emma stared.

“James Whitmore.”

Daniel nodded.

“My father authorized the account before he died.”

“But that’s impossible.”

“He planned the transfer years earlier.”

Emma frowned.

“He knew you’d meet me?”

“He knew you’d need each other.”

“That’s terrifying.”

Daniel laughed.

“Fathers can be dramatic.”

Emma smiled.

Then her phone buzzed.

A new bank notification.

Another transfer.

+$200,000.00

Emma stared.

Daniel stared.

“Again?”

She opened the transaction.

This time, there was a note.

For the next person who needs a chance.

Emma looked at Daniel.

He smiled.

“Your father?”

“No.”

“My father?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Emma looked at the account.

The sender was anonymous.

She laughed.

“I think someone else is copying us.”

Daniel smiled.

“Good.”

She closed the app.

“What do we do?”

“Find them.”

Emma nodded.

Together.
