I Was the Only Employee Sitting Alone at My Boss’s Wedding — Then Her Younger Sister Whispered a Secret That Changed Everything

Chapter 8

The first date happened accidentally.

At least, that’s what Olivia called it.

We were supposed to discuss a charity project.

Instead, we went to a small restaurant downtown.

No executives.

No business cards.

No security.

Just us.

She ordered pasta.

I ordered steak.

We talked for four hours.

About childhood.

Family.

Mistakes.

The futures we’d imagined.

Then she asked:

“Why are you still single?”

I smiled.

“Busy.”

“That’s a terrible excuse.”

“So is yours.”

She laughed.

“I wasn’t ready.”

“Neither was I.”

She looked at me.

“Are you now?”

I knew what she was asking.

I didn’t answer immediately.

Then I said:

“I think so.”

She smiled.

Our first kiss happened outside the restaurant.

It felt strangely natural.

Not dramatic.

Not rushed.

Just honest.

The next morning, Olivia called me into her office.

I expected a serious conversation.

Instead, she said:

“We need to discuss your position.”

My heart dropped.

“What?”

“If we’re going to continue this, you can’t report directly to me.”

I nodded.

She had already prepared a plan.

I would move to the independent ethics foundation.

Separate reporting structure.

No direct financial authority.

No conflicts.

It was professional.

Fair.

And exactly what I had expected from her.

“Okay.”

She smiled.

“I don’t want anyone saying I gave you something.”

“I know.”

“I want you to know that.”

“I do.”

We held hands.

Then Natalie opened the door.

“I knew it!”

We both stared.

“Knew what?”

“You two.”

Olivia groaned.

“How long?”

Natalie smiled.

“About five minutes.”

She laughed.

Then she hugged her sister.

“I knew you’d choose someone who actually deserved you.”

I looked away.

Olivia smiled.

For the first time since the wedding, the family felt different.

The secrets were gone.

The fear was gone.

There was finally room for something real.
