I Was the Only Employee Sitting Alone at My Boss’s Wedding — Then Her Younger Sister Whispered a Secret That Changed Everything
Chapter 7
Olivia returned to work.
She became more disciplined.
More open.
Less guarded.
She changed the company’s executive structure.
She removed several directors who had ignored suspicious transactions.
She also created an internal ethics division.
I became its director.
Natalie joined the board as an independent adviser.
The three of us worked closely.
Our relationship became almost ordinary.
We argued.
We laughed.
We ate lunch together.
Sometimes Natalie teased me.
“You know she likes you.”
I looked at her.
“Who’s ‘she’?”
Natalie smiled.
“You know.”
I didn’t answer.
“She hasn’t dated anyone in two years.”
“She’s healing.”
“Maybe.”
Natalie walked away.
I found Olivia looking at me.
“What did she say?”
“Nothing important.”
Olivia laughed.
“That’s usually when she’s saying something important.”
One evening, we stayed late at the office.
The building was almost empty.
Olivia sat across from me.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“That’s dangerous.”
She smiled.
“About the wedding.”
I became quiet.
“I’ve been thinking about what you said.”
“What did I say?”
“You said I trusted you.”
“I did.”
She looked at me.
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“I trusted you because you never wanted anything from me.”
I didn’t know how to respond.
She continued:
“But I was wrong about something.”
“What?”
“Trust doesn’t mean keeping people at a distance.”
I looked at her.
“You’re not.”
“No.”
She smiled.
“I’m not.”
There was a long silence.
Then she said:
“Would you have dated me if I wasn’t your boss?”
I almost laughed.
“Absolutely not.”
Her expression fell.
Then I added:
“Because I would’ve been too intimidated.”
She laughed.
“That’s better.”
I smiled.
The moment ended when Natalie walked into the office.
“Am I interrupting?”
Olivia stared at her.
“Yes.”
Natalie smiled.
“Good.”
She left.
We laughed.
But the question remained.
Would I have dated Olivia?
The answer was becoming harder to deny.
Yes.
