Ethan had planned to sell the house.
He had decided before deployment.
The place held too many memories and too many repairs. He wanted a clean start.
But now Claire was telling him his sister had been investigating something connected to their father.
And somehow, Claire had been documenting everything.
He opened the notebook again.
This time, he read the entries carefully.
June 4 — Ethan still intends to sell. Mia thinks he should wait.
June 11 — Found another envelope in the attic. No return address.
June 14 — Ethan’s father may have known about the property dispute.
June 18 — Mia says the letters change everything.
Ethan looked up.
“Property dispute?”
Claire nodded.
“Your father owned land outside town.”
“I know.”
“Apparently there was another claim on it.”
“From who?”
“That’s what Mia was trying to figure out.”
Ethan flipped through more pages.
The notes weren’t gossip.
They were a timeline.
Dates.
Names.
Phone numbers.
Questions.
And occasionally, short observations.
Someone has been going through the storage box.
The envelope was moved.
Mia thinks Dad hid something before he died.
Then he reached the final page.
Only one sentence was written there.
The person we’re looking for knows Ethan is coming home.
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
“When did you write this?”
“Last night.”
“Why?”
“I found something.”
She reached into the kitchen drawer.
From beneath a stack of takeout menus, she pulled out a small envelope.
It had no stamp.
No address.
Only Ethan’s name.
“I found it under the front door yesterday.”
Ethan stared at it.
“Did you open it?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it was addressed to you.”
He took the envelope.
Before he could open it, a car stopped outside.
Claire looked through the window.
Her face went pale.
“It’s Mia.”
Ethan relaxed.
Then Claire shook her head.
“No.”
A second car had stopped behind Mia’s.
