I Came Home From Deployment Three Days Early… Then I Found a Notebook With My Name on It
Chapter 7
Robert Hale had been their father’s accountant.
For years, he had been the family’s quiet, dependable presence.
He had helped with taxes.
Handled paperwork.
Attended birthdays.
Sent flowers after their father’s funeral.
Mia had even called him when she found the blue folder.
Ethan suddenly understood why.
“How much did you tell Robert?”
Mia’s face tightened.
“Everything.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan looked at the notes.
The dates.
The missing letters.
The envelope.
Everything pointed in one direction.
But Ethan refused to believe it.
“Maybe we’re wrong.”
Lucas shook his head.
“My father wasn’t.”
“You barely knew him.”
“I knew enough.”
Lucas handed Ethan another letter.
This one was unfinished.
Their father had written:
If anything happens to me, the land should never be transferred without the—
The sentence ended there.
“Without the what?” Ethan asked.
Lucas shook his head.
“We don’t know.”
Claire suddenly looked at the notebook.
“Wait.”
She flipped through it.
“There’s something here.”
She found a page dated June 21.
Mia believes the missing phrase is hidden in the house.
Ethan stared.
“Where?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Mia looked toward the hallway.
“Your father used to hide things in obvious places.”
Ethan remembered.
The old house had dozens of strange hiding places.
Loose floorboards.
Books with hollowed centers.
The false bottom of the desk drawer.
He walked toward his father’s study.
Claire followed.
“You don’t have to come.”
“I know.”
She continued anyway.
Inside the study, Ethan noticed something immediately.
The bookshelf had been disturbed.
One book was slightly crooked.
He pulled it out.
Nothing.
Then Claire noticed the dust.
“That book hasn’t moved in years.”
Ethan examined the shelf.
Behind it was a narrow gap.
Inside sat a small cassette recorder.
The batteries were dead.
Beside it was a note.
For Ethan. When he is old enough to understand why I stayed silent.
Ethan’s hands trembled.
He found batteries in the drawer.
Pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then his father’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
“If you’re hearing this, then I failed to explain something when I had the chance.”
The recording clicked.
And his father’s next words changed everything.
