The key opened the hidden door.
Inside was a tiny room containing filing cabinets, boxes, and a desk.
The original trust documents were there.
So were photographs.
Bank records.
Copies of fraudulent transfers.
And a letter from Ethan’s father.
But the most important document wasn’t about the land.
It was about Claire.
Her mother had been the first person to discover the fraud.
She had agreed to testify.
Then she disappeared from the investigation.
The reason was written in a letter.
She had been threatened.
Not with money.
With Claire’s safety.
So Ethan’s father had helped her hide the evidence.
He had also arranged for the trust to protect the property until someone could safely expose the fraud.
Claire read the letter with shaking hands.
“He protected my mother.”
Ethan nodded.
“And you.”
She looked at him.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he thought keeping you away from it would keep you safe.”
Mia picked up another document.
“This proves Robert was involved.”
Lucas shook his head.
“It proves more than that.”
At the bottom of the file was a signature.
Robert’s.
Next to it was another name.
Someone none of them recognized.
Ethan frowned.
“Who’s that?”
Lucas looked at the signature.
“My father.”
“But your father was supposed to be helping him.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No.”
He looked devastated.
“My father was working undercover with yours.”
The entire story changed again.
Daniel Mercer hadn’t been part of the scheme.
He had been trying to expose it.
Robert had discovered the plan.
And when Ethan’s father died, Daniel disappeared soon afterward.
Ethan looked at the dates.
There was only one unexplained gap.
Three weeks.
“Where was Daniel during those three weeks?”
Lucas looked down.
“According to the last letter, he was meeting someone.”
“Who?”
Lucas pointed to the final page.
A single sentence was written there.
If Daniel disappears, ask Claire. She knows where we met.
Claire stared at the page.
“I don’t.”
Then she suddenly remembered.
“The lake.”
