Ten years after the laptop incident, Olivia was thirty-nine.
Ethan was forty-five.
Their daughter, Sophie, was six.
She loved stories.
Especially the story of how her parents met.
One evening, she asked,
“Daddy, did you really give Mommy your computer?”
Ethan smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because hers didn’t work.”
Sophie looked at Olivia.
“And then you married him?”
Olivia laughed.
“Eventually.”
“Why?”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“Because he was kind before he knew I was important.”
Sophie thought about that.
“Was Mommy important?”
Ethan answered.
“She was always important.”
Olivia smiled.
Sophie looked confused.
“So she was the boss?”
“Not yet.”
“What was she?”
Ethan smiled.
“A stranger.”
Sophie giggled.
“Mommy was a stranger?”
“Yes.”
“What did you think?”
“That she needed help.”
“And then?”
Olivia kissed her daughter’s forehead.
“Then everything changed.”
Later that night, Olivia and Ethan sat on the balcony.
She asked,
“Would you do it again?”
“Give you the laptop?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“Absolutely.”
“Even knowing who I was?”
“Especially not knowing.”
She leaned against him.
