Everyone Ignored Her… Until The Dean Read Her Final Letter

Chapter 7

The name belonged to someone Emily had trusted.

Professor Daniel Harris.

She stared at the page for hours.

It made no sense.

Professor Harris had helped her.

He had supported her during the assembly.

He had given investigators documents.

Why would his name appear in the financial records?

Emily checked everything again.

There it was.

A consulting company.

Harris Academic Solutions.

Payments totaling $1.3 million.

Emily’s heart sank.

She confronted him.

“Why?”

Professor Harris looked exhausted.

“I wondered when you’d find it.”

“You took money.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“From the university?”

“From the foundation.”

“Why?”

He sat down.

“I was blackmailed.”

Emily stared.

“By whom?”

“The people behind the network.”

He explained.

Years earlier, his wife had become seriously ill.

Medical bills had destroyed their savings.

Someone offered financial help.

Then they demanded favors.

At first, small favors.

A signature.

A recommendation.

A financial report.

Eventually, the favors became part of the larger network.

“I tried to stop.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

Emily felt betrayed.

“You could have told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

She closed her notebook.

“You’re still going to testify.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

The revelation changed the case.

The network wasn’t simply made up of greedy people.

It was built on fear.

Blackmail.

Secrets.

Debt.

People had been trapped.

Emily realized that exposing corruption wasn’t enough.

Someone had to understand why people became part of it.

She began studying the network differently.

Instead of following only money, she followed pressure.

Who threatened whom?

Who owed whom?

Who benefited?

The pattern finally became clear.

At the center was a private investment firm.

Its owner was a billionaire named Charles Whitmore.

The dean’s older brother.

And Charles wasn’t merely connected to the university.

He had been funding its board for fifteen years.

Emily realized why the administration had protected the money.

They weren’t protecting the university.

They were protecting Charles.

She sent the evidence to Agent Mitchell.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Emily answered.

A man’s voice said:

“You should have stopped.”

“Who is this?”

“You know.”

The call ended.

Emily looked at Sarah.

“Was that him?”

Emily nodded.

“Charles Whitmore.”

The next morning, Charles agreed to testify.

But he demanded one condition.

He wanted to speak directly to Emily.
