The first person Emily tried to warn was the student newspaper editor.
Her name was Maya Rodriguez.
Maya was known for investigating university controversies.
Emily waited outside the newspaper office.
When Maya arrived, Emily handed her a folder.
“I found something.”
Maya glanced at it.
“What is this?”
“Financial records.”
Maya opened the folder.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you get these?”
Emily hesitated.
“Does it matter?”
“It matters if they’re real.”
“They are.”
Maya looked through the pages.
“You think the university is stealing scholarship money?”
“I’m not sure.”
“But you think someone is.”
Emily nodded.
Maya closed the folder.
“I’ll look at it.”
Emily felt a small wave of relief.
Maybe she wouldn’t have to do this alone.
The next morning, however, Maya returned the folder.
“I can’t publish it.”
Emily stared at her.
“Why?”
“My editor killed the story.”
“Why?”
Maya looked uncomfortable.
“Pressure from the administration.”
Emily’s heart sank.
“Did they threaten you?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“They reminded me my scholarship depends on the university.”
Emily understood.
Another door closed.
Then another.
Emily tried the student government.
They refused.
She tried the faculty ethics committee.
They delayed.
She emailed the university’s legal department.
No response.
Eventually, she realized something.
Everyone knew something was wrong.
Everyone was afraid.
And everyone was waiting for someone else to speak first.
Emily returned to her dorm.
She sat at her desk.
Her roommate, Sarah, watched her silently.
“You okay?”
Emily nodded.
“I’m fine.”
Sarah frowned.
“You always say that.”
Emily smiled weakly.
“I don’t know what else to say.”
Sarah sat beside her.
“You don’t have to handle everything alone.”
Emily looked at her.
Nobody had ever said that to her without wanting something.
She almost cried.
Instead, she opened her notebook.
“I found something.”
Sarah listened.
For the first time, Emily told someone everything.
Sarah’s face went pale.
“Emily, this is huge.”
“I know.”
“You need protection.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
Emily laughed softly.
“I don’t have anyone powerful enough to protect me.”
Sarah looked at her.
“Maybe you don’t need powerful.”
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe you need the truth.”
That sentence stayed with Emily.
Two days later, Emily discovered another transfer.
This one was different.
The money had gone directly to a company owned by the university dean’s brother.
She stared at the document.
Then she found something even worse.
The transaction had been authorized by the dean.
Dr. Richard Whitmore.
The most respected administrator on campus.
The man students trusted.
The man who had personally rejected Emily’s fellowship application.
Emily’s hands trembled.
Now she knew exactly how high the corruption went.
And she knew what would happen if they discovered she had evidence.
She could be expelled.
Her scholarship could disappear.
Her academic career could end.
But Emily had already made her decision.
She would expose them.
Even if nobody stood beside her.
