Everyone Ignored Her… Until The Dean Read Her Final Letter
Chapter 6
The investigation expanded quickly.
State auditors arrived.
Federal investigators requested documents.
The university board suspended Dean Whitmore.
Ethan Parker’s father publicly denied any wrongdoing.
But Emily kept working.
She had learned that financial scandals rarely ended with one person.
They spread.
Like cracks in glass.
One name led to another.
One company led to another.
Eventually, Emily found the connection.
The university’s alumni fund was only one part of a larger network.
Several private foundations were moving money between universities, corporations, and political organizations.
The total amount was staggering.
More than $90 million.
Emily took the evidence to federal investigators.
An agent named Laura Mitchell listened carefully.
“You understand what you’re holding?”
Emily nodded.
“Yes.”
“This could become a major case.”
“I know.”
“You could be a witness.”
Emily hesitated.
“Will I be protected?”
Mitchell looked at her.
“We’ll do everything we can.”
Emily nodded.
Then she asked:
“Can I finish school?”
Mitchell smiled.
“I think you just changed your university.”
News of Emily’s investigation spread across the country.
Students from other universities contacted her.
Some had similar stories.
Some sent documents.
Some simply wrote:
Thank you for speaking.
Emily began receiving hundreds of messages.
For the first time, people weren’t asking her to do their homework.
They weren’t asking for money.
They were asking her to listen.
And she did.
But the attention came with a cost.
Reporters followed her.
Students photographed her.
People who had ignored her for years suddenly wanted interviews.
One afternoon, Ethan approached her.
Emily stopped.
“What do you want?”
“I want to apologize.”
She looked at him.
“For what?”
“Everything.”
Emily said nothing.
Ethan looked ashamed.
“My father used me.”
“He used the university.”
“I know.”
Emily studied him.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
She believed him.
But forgiveness wasn’t automatic.
“You laughed at me.”
“I know.”
“You called me weird.”
“I know.”
“You thought I was beneath you.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“I was wrong.”
Emily nodded.
“Then prove it.”
“How?”
“Tell the investigators everything you know.”
Ethan looked frightened.
“My father will destroy me.”
Emily replied quietly:
“Then decide who you want to be.”
Ethan eventually agreed.
That decision would become one of the most important pieces of evidence in the case.
But Emily still hadn’t opened the final page of her notebook.
Because she knew the name written there.
And she wasn’t ready to say it aloud.
