Cowboy Found a Widow and Her Son Sleeping in His Stable. He Made One Quiet Decision
Chapter 4
The abandoned church smelled of dust and old wood.
Caleb entered through a broken side door while Anna and Samuel waited outside.
He found the altar.
Then the floor beneath it.
Nothing.
He searched for nearly an hour.
Finally, he noticed a loose stone near the wall.
He lifted it.
Beneath it was a narrow wooden compartment.
Inside were ledgers.
Dozens of them.
Caleb opened the first.
Names.
Brands.
Dates.
Amounts.
He turned another page.
There it was.
His own ranch.
Caleb’s jaw tightened.
Someone had forged a document claiming his property was already sold.
A second ledger contained payments to the sheriff.
A third listed names.
Men Silas had threatened.
Men who had disappeared.
And at the bottom of the last page was a name Caleb recognized.
Eli Mercer.
His brother.
Caleb stopped breathing.
Beside Eli’s name was a payment.
Five hundred dollars.
Paid to Silas Boone.
Caleb stared at it.
His brother had not been killed because of a cattle dispute.
He had been murdered.
And someone had paid for it.
Behind him, Anna whispered:
“Caleb?”
He turned.
She saw his face.
“What is it?”
He handed her the ledger.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she covered her mouth.
“They killed your brother?”
Caleb nodded.
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.”
“You weren’t supposed to.”
A sound came from outside.
Hooves.
Caleb extinguished the lantern.
He pulled Anna behind the wall.
Three men entered the church.
Silas Boone was among them.
“Search it,” he ordered.
Caleb looked at Anna.
Then at the ledgers.
There was no way out through the front.
But behind the altar was another door.
Caleb pushed it open.
They crawled through a narrow passage beneath the church.
Samuel was waiting outside.
Caleb grabbed his hand.
“Run.”
They disappeared into the woods just before Silas found the empty compartment.
But Silas found something else.
A single boot print.
And he smiled.
“Mercer.”
