Cowboy Found a Widow and Her Son Sleeping in His Stable. He Made One Quiet Decision

Chapter 2

Caleb Mercer was not a man who trusted easily.

Five years earlier, his younger brother Eli had been murdered during a cattle dispute.

Caleb had learned something after that.

Kindness could get a man buried.

So he kept his distance.

He owned a modest ranch outside Grey Hollow, enough cattle to survive, two horses he trusted, and one old farmhouse that had been empty since his mother died.

He preferred it that way.

No wife.

No children.

No promises.

Just work.

But when he returned from the kitchen with coffee, biscuits, and eggs, the boy was awake.

He sat beneath Caleb’s coat, watching him suspiciously.

“What is your name?”

The boy hesitated.

“Samuel.”

“How old?”

“Eight.”

Caleb nodded.

He put the plate down.

“Eat.”

Samuel looked at his mother first.

Anna nodded.

The boy grabbed the biscuit with both hands.

Caleb turned away.

He didn’t want them to see how much the sight bothered him.

A child should never eat like someone expected the food to disappear.

Anna finally spoke.

“My husband didn’t die in a robbery.”

Caleb stopped.

“What happened?”

“Men came to our house.”

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket.

“They wanted something Thomas had.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Caleb looked at her.

“You’re lying.”

Anna’s eyes filled with fear.

“I know.”

Before he could ask more, a horse outside whinnied.

Caleb moved to the door.

Three riders were approaching.

He recognized the man in front.

Silas Boone.

A cattle buyer who had recently become something else.

Something darker.

Silas stopped outside the ranch.

“Mercer!”

Caleb stepped into the doorway.

“What do you want?”

Silas smiled.

“Word is you found something in your stable.”

Caleb’s eyes narrowed.

“Word travels fast.”

“Small towns.”

Silas looked past him.

“Mind if I come inside?”

“No.”

The smile disappeared.

Silas leaned forward.

“I’m looking for Anna Whitmore and her boy.”

Behind Caleb, Anna stopped breathing.

Samuel clutched the blanket.

Caleb slowly closed the stable door.

Then he looked at Silas.

“You won’t find them here.”

Silas studied him.

“I hope you’re telling the truth.”

Caleb held his gaze.

“I always do.”

Silas turned his horse.

But before leaving, he called back:

“Don’t make a mistake, Mercer.”

Caleb watched the riders disappear.

Then he returned to Anna.

She was shaking.

“You know him?”

“Yes.”

“Did my husband owe him money?”

Anna shook her head.

“No.”

“Then what does he want?”

She looked toward Samuel.

And whispered:

“My husband found something.”
