Cowboy Found a Widow and Her Son Sleeping in His Stable. He Made One Quiet Decision
Chapter 7
The safe was hidden beneath a loose floorboard.
Caleb had not seen it since childhood.
The key turned with a metallic click.
Inside was a bundle of letters.
And a photograph.
Caleb picked it up.
His father stood beside Silas Boone.
Both men were younger.
Behind them stood several cattle.
Anna looked over his shoulder.
“Your father knew him.”
Caleb nodded.
“He did.”
Then he found the letters.
They revealed a truth Caleb had never imagined.
His father had once partnered with Silas.
Together, they had built a cattle business.
But Silas had eventually begun stealing from their partners.
Caleb’s father threatened to expose him.
Silas retaliated.
He didn’t kill Caleb’s father.
He destroyed him financially.
The old man died believing he had failed his family.
Caleb sat silently.
Anna placed a hand on his shoulder.
“He didn’t fail you.”
Caleb looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because you’re still fighting.”
He looked at her hand.
Then at her.
Neither moved.
Suddenly Samuel ran into the room.
“Someone’s coming!”
Caleb grabbed his rifle.
Outside, horses approached.
Too many.
Silas had found them.
Caleb quickly gathered the papers.
“There’s a back entrance.”
Anna grabbed Samuel.
They escaped through the woods.
Gunshots cracked behind them.
Caleb fired once.
A rider fell.
They ran toward the river.
But Anna stumbled.
Caleb caught her.
“Go!”
“I can’t.”
He lifted her into his arms.
“Then I’ll carry you.”
They reached the riverbank.
The only way across was an old bridge.
Halfway over, bullets struck the wooden planks.
Samuel screamed.
Caleb shielded them.
Then the bridge gave way.
All three fell.
The river swallowed them.
