Cowboy Found a Widow and Her Son Sleeping in His Stable. He Made One Quiet Decision

Chapter 3

Caleb moved Anna and Samuel into the farmhouse before noon.

He gave them his mother’s old bedroom.

Anna resisted.

“I can’t take your room.”

“You’re not taking it.”

“Then where will you sleep?”

“The barn.”

She stared at him.

“You’re giving us your bed?”

Caleb shrugged.

“It’s only a bed.”

But Anna understood it wasn’t.

It was trust.

That night, Caleb sat outside the house cleaning his rifle.

Inside, he heard Samuel laughing for the first time.

It was a strange sound.

Caleb had forgotten what children sounded like.

The next morning, Samuel appeared at the doorway.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“What?”

“Can I help with the horses?”

Caleb looked at him.

“You know horses?”

“My father taught me.”

Caleb handed him a brush.

“Then start with the brown mare.”

Samuel smiled.

For the first time, Caleb saw something other than fear in the boy’s eyes.

He saw his own brother.

Eli had been eight when Caleb first taught him how to ride.

For a moment, the memory hurt so sharply that Caleb had to look away.

Later that afternoon, Anna came outside.

She carried a small wooden box.

“My husband left this.”

Caleb opened it.

Inside was a brass key.

A torn piece of paper.

And a name.

Samuel Boone.

Caleb frowned.

“Boone?”

Anna nodded.

“Silas’s brother.”

“He died six years ago.”

“I know.”

Caleb read the paper again.

There were only six words.

The truth is beneath the church.

Caleb looked toward Grey Hollow.

The church stood on the hill above town.

Old.

Abandoned.

Built over a cemetery.

“You said your husband found something.”

Anna nodded.

“He was a bookkeeper for Silas.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“He discovered the cattle records were false.”

“What kind of false?”

“Thousands of dollars in cattle were being stolen and sold under different brands.”

Caleb understood.

Silas wasn’t just stealing cattle.

He was stealing entire ranches.

Changing records.

Bribing officials.

Driving widows and small farmers off their land.

“And Thomas knew?”

“He tried to expose him.”

Caleb looked at Samuel.

Then back at Anna.

“That’s why your husband died.”

Anna whispered:

“Yes.”

Caleb closed the box.

“Then we’re going to find the truth.”
