Cowboy Found a Widow and Her Son Sleeping in His Stable. He Made One Quiet Decision
Chapter 11
Silas took Samuel before sunrise.
There were no witnesses.
Only a broken window.
A horse missing from the stable.
And one small boot print in the mud.
Anna collapsed.
Caleb found the trail.
He followed it north.
The mountains rose ahead.
He rode until his horse could go no farther.
Then he continued on foot.
For two days, he tracked Silas.
Finally, he found an abandoned mining camp.
Samuel was inside.
Silas stood beside him.
“You came alone.”
Caleb raised his rifle.
“Let him go.”
Silas laughed.
“You’re becoming predictable.”
Caleb looked at Samuel.
“Are you hurt?”
Samuel shook his head.
Silas pressed a pistol against the boy’s shoulder.
“Drop the rifle.”
Caleb obeyed.
Silas smiled.
“You know what your mistake was?”
Caleb stared at him.
“You cared.”
Silas stepped closer.
“That always makes men weak.”
Caleb looked toward Samuel.
Then toward the old mine entrance.
He noticed a lantern.
A stack of loose timber.
And a broken support beam.
He understood.
“Silas.”
“What?”
“You’re right.”
Silas frowned.
“I did care.”
Caleb kicked the lantern.
Darkness swallowed the camp.
A gunshot exploded.
Then another.
Timbers crashed.
Samuel ran.
Caleb grabbed him.
They escaped through the rear tunnel.
Behind them, the mine began collapsing.
They reached daylight.
Samuel looked back.
“Is he dead?”
Caleb shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then a gunshot came from the darkness.
Caleb pushed Samuel down.
The bullet struck the rock.
Silas emerged.
Bleeding.
Furious.
Caleb had one bullet left.
So did Silas.
They stood facing each other.
Neither moved.
Then Silas whispered:
“You’re just like your father.”
Caleb lowered his rifle.
“No.”
He looked at Samuel.
“I’m better.”
Silas raised his gun.
Caleb fired.
