CEO Ordered a Single Dad’s Locker Opened in Front of Everyone—Then One Discovery Changed Everything

Chapter 7

Richard Whitmore lived in a mansion on the edge of the city.

He opened the door himself.

No security guards.

No staff.

Only an elderly man with tired eyes.

“Elena.”

She hugged him.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then she remembered the documents.

She stepped back.

“What was Project Haven?”

Richard looked at David.

“Who is he?”

“David Reed.”

Richard’s face changed.

“You.”

David nodded.

Richard closed his eyes.

“I knew this day would come.”

Elena stared.

“You knew my father?”

“I knew both your fathers.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Richard walked into the study.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Robert.

Daniel.

Elena’s mother.

Richard.

They had been friends.

Business partners.

Almost family.

“What happened?” Elena asked.

Richard poured himself water.

“Your father discovered a financial network inside the company.”

“Northbridge.”

“Yes.”

“Marcus was involved.”

“Yes.”

“You were involved.”

Richard looked at her.

“I was.”

David stepped forward.

“In what way?”

Richard sat down.

“I helped build Project Haven.”

Elena’s face tightened.

“To protect the company?”

“To protect the people your father believed were being targeted.”

“Then why did you take my property?”

Richard lowered his head.

“Because I needed money to keep the project alive.”

Elena stared.

“You stole from me.”

“I borrowed.”

“Without permission.”

“Yes.”

David shook his head.

“You’re still lying.”

Richard looked at him.

“What do you know?”

“My father kept records.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Daniel should have burned them.”

“He didn’t.”

Richard stood.

“Then you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”

“What are we dealing with?”

Richard walked toward a locked cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photographs.

Letters.

Bank statements.

And a newspaper clipping about Robert’s death.

Richard placed it on the desk.

“Your father didn’t die because of the financial investigation.”

Elena stared.

“Then why?”

“Because he found the person at the top.”

“Who?”

Richard’s voice dropped.

“I never knew his real name.”

David frowned.

“Then what did you know?”

“A code name.”

Richard turned a photograph around.

On it was a black symbol.

The same symbol from the notebook.

THE ARCHITECT.

Elena whispered:

“Who is the Architect?”

Richard looked toward the window.

“He owns nothing directly.”

“Then how does he control everything?”

“He uses people.”

“Who?”

Richard looked at Elena.

“Executives. Bankers. Lawyers. Politicians. Anyone willing to trade loyalty for money.”

David asked:

“Is Marcus one of them?”

“Yes.”

“Who recruited him?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Elena realized.

“You know.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“The Architect recruited your mother.”

Elena froze.

“My mother?”

Richard nodded.

“She wasn’t working for him.”

“Then why?”

“To protect you.”

Elena’s voice broke.

“What did she do?”

Richard walked toward another cabinet.

“She became an informant.”

He opened it.

Inside was a bundle of letters.

All written by Elena’s mother.

The first sentence made Elena’s hands shake.

Richard, if I disappear, do not let Elena believe I abandoned her.
