CEO Ordered a Single Dad’s Locker Opened in Front of Everyone—Then One Discovery Changed Everything

Chapter 8

Elena read every letter.

Her mother had spent years secretly documenting the network.

She had known Robert was in danger.

She had known Daniel Reed was investigating.

She had known Marcus had been compromised.

And she had known Richard was trying to protect them.

But one letter was different.

It was dated two weeks before Robert died.

The Architect knows about David.

Elena looked at him.

“David?”

Richard nodded.

“Your father had found evidence that the Architect wanted.”

“What evidence?”

“The original ledger.”

“Where is it?”

Richard shook his head.

“Robert never told me.”

Elena looked at David.

“Did your father?”

“No.”

Richard continued.

“Your fathers separated the evidence.”

“Between us?”

“Yes.”

“What did they hide?”

“The financial ledger.”

“Where?”

Richard looked at the red box.

“That box contains half the answer.”

David opened it again.

They searched the contents.

The key.

The tape.

The drawing.

A small metal tag.

Elena picked it up.

214.

David stared.

“My locker.”

Elena looked at him.

“That’s why your father told you to keep the notebook there.”

David understood.

The locker had not been random.

It was a hiding place.

Someone had known.

Elena’s expression changed.

“Who ordered my locker opened?”

David looked at her.

“Who else knew about the investigation?”

Elena thought.

“Marcus.”

“Security?”

“Maybe.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

Then Elena remembered.

Her security director had received the order.

But the order had come from—

The Board.

She called the company.

The board meeting had been scheduled for that afternoon.

They drove back.

The building was surrounded by reporters.

News had already spread.

Someone had leaked that Elena was investigating financial fraud.

Inside the boardroom, twelve executives waited.

Marcus was absent.

Richard entered behind Elena.

The chairman stood.

“Ms. Whitmore, perhaps we should postpone.”

“No.”

She placed the notebook on the table.

“This ends today.”

One director laughed nervously.

“You’re making serious accusations.”

Elena looked around.

“Then let me make them carefully.”

She projected the documents.

Transactions.

Shell companies.

Property transfers.

Names.

The room fell silent.

One executive stood.

“This is fabricated.”

David placed the original notebook on the table.

“My father wrote these records.”

The executive stared.

“Daniel Reed?”

“Yes.”

The room changed.

Everyone knew Daniel Reed’s reputation.

He had been the auditor who disappeared after accusing the company of fraud.

Elena continued.

“My father was investigating the same network.”

A director whispered:

“Robert knew.”

“Yes.”

Richard stepped forward.

“And I helped him.”

The chairman looked shocked.

“You?”

Richard nodded.

“We were trying to protect the company.”

“Then why was the evidence hidden?”

“Because someone inside this room was feeding information to the Architect.”

Everyone looked around.

Elena’s eyes moved slowly across the table.

Then she saw one director reach for his phone.

“Don’t.”

He froze.

“Put it down.”

The man smiled.

“Or what?”

Elena’s voice was calm.

“You can either leave your phone on the table…”

She paused.

“…or we can find out who you’re calling.”

He placed it down.

David checked the screen.

One outgoing number.

Marcus Vale.

Elena’s face hardened.

But then the building’s fire alarm began screaming.

Smoke appeared beneath the boardroom door.

Someone shouted.

“Fire!”

The lights went out.

In the darkness, David grabbed Elena’s hand.

“Stay with me.”

Then someone whispered behind them:

“Run.”
