At 8:52 a.m., Elena entered Whitmore Industries.
Thomas stood in the lobby.
He looked older than she remembered.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
A calm smile.
“Hello, Elena.”
She stopped several feet away.
“Where is Sarah?”
“Safe.”
“You’re lying.”
“Of course.”
David stepped beside her.
Thomas looked at him.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
David said nothing.
Thomas extended his hand.
“The notebook.”
Elena held it out.
Thomas took it.
He opened it.
His smile disappeared.
“These aren’t the originals.”
“No.”
“Where are they?”
Elena smiled.
“You’ll never know.”
Thomas looked at her.
“You’re bluffing.”
“Am I?”
He glanced toward the security cameras.
“Take them upstairs.”
Two guards approached.
David whispered:
“Now.”
Elena pressed a button on her phone.
Every screen in the lobby turned on.
A recording began.
Thomas’s voice.
His threats.
His confession.
His connection to Marcus.
He looked around.
“What did you do?”
Elena smiled.
“Everything you said was recorded.”
Thomas rushed toward her.
David stepped between them.
Security officers entered.
But Thomas laughed.
“You think this proves anything?”
Elena’s expression changed.
“Not yet.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“The recording is already being transmitted to investigators.”
Thomas stopped.
The lobby doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Behind them was Sarah Miller.
Alive.
Thomas stared.
“You.”
Sarah smiled.
“You should have finished the job eleven years ago.”
Marcus was brought in moments later.
He had been arrested trying to leave the city.
He looked at Thomas.
“You said no one knew.”
Thomas glared.
“You failed.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Elena.
“She did.”
Thomas suddenly pulled a weapon.
Everything happened at once.
David grabbed Elena.
Agents shouted.
Thomas raised the gun.
Then Richard stepped forward.
“Thomas.”
His brother stopped.
“You’re done.”
Thomas’s hand trembled.
Richard continued.
“Robert trusted me to stop you.”
“You betrayed the family.”
“No.”
Richard looked at Elena.
“I protected it.”
Thomas lowered the gun.
Agents arrested him.
Elena stood motionless.
David touched her shoulder.
“It’s over.”
She looked at the notebook.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Now we find out how much he destroyed.”
