CEO Ordered a Single Dad’s Locker Opened in Front of Everyone—Then One Discovery Changed Everything
Chapter 9
They escaped through the emergency stairwell.
Smoke filled the upper floors.
Employees crowded the lobby.
Firefighters rushed inside.
Elena stood outside with David and Richard.
Her office windows glowed orange.
Everything was burning.
“The evidence,” she whispered.
David looked at her.
“The notebook is safe.”
She shook her head.
“Not everything.”
Richard stared at the building.
“The Architect wanted the archives.”
“How did he know?”
Richard’s eyes moved toward the boardroom.
“Because someone told him.”
The director who had called Marcus was missing.
So was another board member.
Elena called the police.
But before she could finish, a black SUV stopped across the street.
A man stepped out.
Marcus.
Elena froze.
He looked directly at her.
Then he raised one hand.
A phone was pressed to his ear.
Elena’s phone rang.
She answered.
Marcus spoke.
“Your father should have listened.”
“Where are you going?”
“Somewhere you can’t follow.”
“Who is the Architect?”
Marcus laughed.
“You’ve met him.”
The line ended.
David stared at the SUV.
“Get down!”
A gunshot cracked.
The bullet struck the pavement.
Everyone screamed.
Marcus disappeared into the SUV.
Police chased him.
But the vehicle vanished into traffic.
Richard turned to Elena.
“He’s desperate.”
“What does he want?”
“The ledger.”
“We don’t have it.”
“You have half.”
David shook his head.
“No.”
Richard looked at him.
“The key.”
David touched the metal key from the red box.
“What does it open?”
Richard answered:
“Your father’s old storage unit.”
David’s eyes widened.
“My father had a storage unit?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Richard gave him an address.
“Northside Station.”
They arrived after midnight.
The storage facility was nearly empty.
Unit 214 was at the end of a corridor.
David inserted the key.
The lock opened.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
David found his father’s handwriting.
For David.
He opened the first box.
Old photographs.
Financial records.
A sealed envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My son,
If you are reading this, Robert trusted you. That means Elena must be with you.
David looked at her.
The letter continued.
The ledger is not a book.
David frowned.
It is a person.
Elena whispered:
“What?”
David read the next line.
Someone has memorized the transactions because the original documents were destroyed.
A name appeared.
Sarah Miller.
David looked at Richard.
“Who is Sarah Miller?”
Richard’s face went pale.
“She was Robert’s secretary.”
“Where is she?”
Richard swallowed.
“She died eleven years ago.”
David opened another envelope.
Inside was a recent photograph.
Sarah Miller.
Alive.
Standing outside a retirement home.
On the back:
She knows who the Architect is.
