CEO Ordered a Single Dad’s Locker Opened in Front of Everyone—Then One Discovery Changed Everything
Chapter 5
By morning, Elena had suspended Marcus.
But Marcus had disappeared before security could reach his home.
His office was empty.
His company laptop had been wiped.
His apartment had been cleaned.
Every trace of him was gone.
Only one thing remained.
A photograph.
Robert Whitmore.
Daniel Reed.
Marcus Vale.
And Elena’s mother.
David looked at it.
“Why were they all together?”
Elena shook her head.
“My father must have been investigating something.”
“What?”
She turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Project Haven.
David stared.
“What’s that?”
“I’ve never heard of it.”
They searched the company’s archives.
Nothing.
Legal records.
Nothing.
Financial records.
Nothing.
Then Lily called David.
“Daddy?”
He answered immediately.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
“Are you coming home?”
“Soon.”
“Mrs. Wilson said you were in trouble.”
David glanced at Elena.
“I’m okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Lily paused.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Do you remember the old red box?”
David’s expression changed.
“What red box?”
“The one Grandpa gave you.”
David stood.
“Where is it?”
“In my room.”
“Don’t touch it.”
“Why?”
“Just don’t.”
Elena watched him.
“What is she talking about?”
David lowered his phone.
“My father left me something.”
“You never mentioned it.”
“I forgot about it.”
He called Lily back.
“Sweetheart, can you take a picture of the box?”
A moment later, his phone buzzed.
He opened the image.
A red metal box sat beneath Lily’s bed.
David’s face went pale.
On the lid was the same symbol he’d seen in the notebook.
A small circle crossed by two lines.
Elena leaned closer.
“My father used that symbol.”
David nodded.
They drove to his house.
Lily was waiting at the front door.
She ran into David’s arms.
“You came.”
He hugged her tightly.
Then he noticed the box.
“Where did you find it?”
“Grandpa’s old suitcase.”
David knelt.
“Did you open it?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Elena stood behind him.
Lily looked up.
“Who is she?”
“This is Elena.”
“The lady from Daddy’s work?”
David nodded.
Lily smiled.
“She’s pretty.”
Elena laughed softly.
“Thank you.”
Lily pointed toward the box.
“Is it important?”
David didn’t answer.
He opened it.
Inside were several old documents.
A key.
A cassette tape.
And a child’s drawing.
David picked up the drawing.
Two boys stood beside a large building.
One was him.
The other was Elena.
At the bottom, in Robert Whitmore’s handwriting:
They will protect each other when we are gone.
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Your father knew us.”
David nodded.
“He knew we’d meet again.”
Then the cassette player clicked.
A voice emerged.
Robert Whitmore.
“If this recording is playing, Marcus has failed to destroy the evidence.”
David and Elena stared at each other.
Robert continued.
“The person who ordered the thefts is not Marcus.”
A pause.
“He is only the man they can see.”
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“The person behind Project Haven is someone Elena has trusted her entire life.”
