Two years later, Adrian stood in front of a packed auditorium.
Hundreds of students sat before him.
He had been invited to speak about business ethics.

“Money is a tool.”
He paused.
“It can build hospitals. It can fund schools. It can feed families.”
He looked across the room.

Amelia sat in the front row.
Ethan sat beside her.
Claire watched from the aisle.
Adrian continued.
“Years ago, I thought humiliating someone would prove I was powerful.”
He smiled faintly.
“I was wrong.”
After the speech, a young waitress approached him.
“Mr. Blackwood?”
“Yes?”
“I heard what happened.”
He smiled.
“Which part?”
“The restaurant.”
Adrian laughed.

She hesitated.
“Is it true she answered you in French?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Adrian glanced toward Amelia.
She smiled.
He turned back.
“She told me that if I wanted to humiliate someone, I should at least choose someone who couldn’t understand me.”
The waitress laughed.
“And you deserved it?”
“Absolutely.”
She thanked him and walked away.
Amelia approached.
“You left something out.”
“What?”
“She told you something else.”
Adrian smiled.
“What?”
“She asked why you needed to humiliate a stranger to feel powerful.”
He nodded.
“That was the important part.”
They walked outside.
The evening sun fell across the city.
Amelia stopped.
“Do you ever think about what would have happened if I hadn’t understood French?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Every day.”
“What do you think?”
“I think I would have walked out of that restaurant thinking I was powerful.”
“And instead?”
“Instead, you destroyed my illusion.”
She smiled.
“I didn’t destroy anything.”

She hugged him.
He closed his eyes.
