“Back Off, She’s With Me!”—Single Dad Ex-SEAL Protected a Stranger Who Was Actually a CEO

Chapter 15

Two years later, the old Bennett headquarters was gone.

In its place stood something smaller.

A community technology center.

Affordable housing offices.

A veterans’ employment program.

A scholarship fund.

And a private foundation named after Emily Cole.

Claire ran it.

Mason helped with the veterans’ programs.

Emma attended the opening ceremony wearing a blue dress and a flower crown.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“Are you nervous?”

“No.”

“You are.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re sweating.”

Claire laughed.

Mason looked at her.

“Don’t encourage her.”

“I think she’s right.”

He smiled.

After the ceremony, the three of them walked toward the lake.

Emma ran ahead.

Mason and Claire stayed behind.

“You happy?” he asked.

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Even without the company?”

“Especially without the company.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

They reached the old diner.

It had been renovated but kept the same sign.

Claire smiled.

“This is where it started.”

Mason opened the door.

“After you.”

They sat in the same booth.

Emma sat between them.

The waitress brought pancakes.

Claire looked at Mason.

“You know what I remember?”

“What?”

“You saying those words.”

“What words?”

She smiled.

“Back off. She’s with me.”

He laughed.

“You liked that?”

“I hated that you pretended I was your girlfriend.”

“And now?”

“Now I wish you had said it sooner.”

He looked at her.

“I would have.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because even before I knew your name, I knew I wanted you safe.”

Claire reached across the table.

She held his hand.

“You changed my life.”

“You changed mine.”

Emma looked up.

“Are you going to kiss again?”

Mason sighed.

“Probably.”

“Can you wait until I’m done eating?”

Claire laughed.

“Deal.”

Emma returned to her pancakes.

Mason looked at Claire.

“I have something.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“That sounds dangerous.”

He reached into his pocket.

A small ring.

Claire stared.

“Mason…”

“I know.”

“You’re terrible at surprises.”

“I’m working on it.”

He stood.

Not because he needed an audience.

Not because the moment had to be perfect.

Just because he wanted her to know.

“Claire Bennett.”

She laughed through her tears.

“I don’t think you need my last name.”

“I like it.”

He knelt beside the booth.

“I don’t have a billion-dollar company anymore.”

“I don’t care.”

“I don’t have a private jet.”

“I know.”

“I have an old truck.”

“I know.”

“A seven-year-old daughter who thinks she’s your boss.”

“She is.”

“And a house that needs painting.”

“Also true.”

He smiled.

“But I have one thing I want to promise you.”

She wiped away a tear.

“What?”

“I’ll choose you.”

He held out the ring.

“Every day.”

Claire looked at him.

The woman who had once arrived in Greyhaven hiding behind a fake name.

The woman who had been hunted by her own company.

The woman who had discovered that power could not protect her.

And the man who had stood between her and danger before knowing anything about her.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Emma cheered.

Mason stood.

Claire kissed him.

This time, Emma covered her eyes dramatically.

“Finally.”

They laughed.

Years earlier, Mason had believed his life was over the day he lost Emily.

He thought his job was simply to keep Emma safe.

Claire had believed her life depended on keeping control.

Both were wrong.

Mason didn’t need to become a soldier again.

Claire didn’t need to remain a billionaire.

They needed each other.

Not because one could protect the other from everything.

But because neither had to carry everything alone anymore.

The phrase that had started it all had been simple.

She’s with me.

At first, it had been a lie.

A line Mason had used to make dangerous men step away from a frightened stranger.

But somewhere between the diner, the secrets, the old photographs, the hidden network, and the nights when one of them simply stayed beside the other, the words became true.

She was with him.

And he was with her.

Not because she was a CEO.

Not because he was an ex-SEAL.

Not because of money.

Not because of protection.

Because they had chosen each other.

Again and again.

Until home was no longer a house.

No longer a company.

No longer a city.

Home was the people waiting at the end of the day.

Mason looked at Claire.

Claire smiled.

Emma reached for both their hands.

And they walked toward the lake together.

For once, Mason didn’t scan the road for danger.

Claire didn’t check her phone for threats.

Emma didn’t ask whether they were safe.

They simply walked.

Together.

And that was enough.
