“Back Off, She’s With Me!”—Single Dad Ex-SEAL Protected a Stranger Who Was Actually a CEO

Chapter 7

They left Greyhaven before sunrise.

Mason drove.

Claire sat beside him.

Emma slept in the back seat.

Sarah had given them coordinates to a secure property once owned by Richard Bennett.

The drive took four hours.

Neither spoke much.

Finally, Claire broke the silence.

“You’re thinking.”

“Yes.”

“About Emily?”

“Yes.”

She waited.

“Tell me about her.”

Mason smiled faintly.

“She laughed loudly.”

Claire smiled.

“That’s good.”

“She hated sleeping late.”

“What else?”

“She loved Emma before Emma was born.”

His voice softened.

“She used to sing to her.”

Claire looked out the window.

“She sounds wonderful.”

“She was.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“I thought I knew everything about her.”

“You couldn’t have known.”

“No.”

“But she was trying to protect you.”

“I know.”

Claire reached across the console.

Their fingers touched.

Neither moved away.

When they reached the property, it was an old lakeside house surrounded by trees.

Mason checked every room.

Clear.

Claire carried Emma inside.

The house had been abandoned for years.

But it still contained furniture.

Old photographs.

Books.

A piano.

Emma wandered into the living room.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“Look.”

She pointed to the wall.

A small photograph showed three children.

Claire.

Mason.

And another boy.

Mason stared.

“Who’s that?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A note was attached.

The children who were never supposed to meet.

Mason felt uneasy.

He removed the photograph.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a USB drive.

And a letter.

Claire opened it.

Her father’s handwriting.

Claire,

If you’re reading this, Victor has already started the final phase.

You cannot trust the board.

You cannot trust the security team.

And you cannot trust the man who claims he is protecting you.

Claire looked at Mason.

“Who does that mean?”

Mason’s expression hardened.

He read the next page.

The only person you can trust is the man whose daughter carries the final key.

Claire looked at Emma.

“What key?”

The three of them stared at the child.

Emma was playing with an old wooden horse.

Mason crouched beside her.

“Sweetheart, where did you get that?”

“The lady gave it to me.”

“What lady?”

Emma pointed upstairs.

Mason immediately stood.

“No one should be here.”

He drew his weapon.

Claire pulled Emma close.

They moved through the house.

Nothing.

Empty hallway.

Open window.

Fresh footprints in the mud outside.

Someone had been inside.

Mason followed the trail.

It led to a small shed.

Inside was a box.

The same black anchor symbol was carved into the lid.

He opened it.

A child’s necklace.

A photograph of Emily.

And a recorded message.

Emily appeared on a small screen.

Mason froze.

His wife’s face.

Alive.

Smiling.

“Hey, Mason.”

His knees almost gave out.

Claire covered her mouth.

Emily continued.

“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.”

Mason stared.

“I want you to know that I didn’t leave you alone.”

The recording paused.

Then:

“Atlantic isn’t about money.”

Mason leaned closer.

“It’s about people.”

“Your daughter is the fail-safe.”

Claire whispered,

“Why?”

“Because Richard trusted me.”

The recording ended.

A second video started.

Victor Bennett appeared.

Mason’s blood ran cold.

Victor looked directly at the camera.

“Congratulations.”

“You found the first layer.”

Then he smiled.

“Now bring me Claire.”

The screen went black.

Mason stood.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“You know what he’s going to do.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He wants you alive.”

“Why?”

“Because he needs the trust.”

“And Emma?”

Mason looked toward the house.

“He needs her too.”

Claire swallowed.

“What do we do?”

Mason checked his weapon.

“We stop him.”
