“Back Off, She’s With Me!”—Single Dad Ex-SEAL Protected a Stranger Who Was Actually a CEO

Chapter 12

The aftermath lasted months.

Marcus was arrested.

Victor confessed.

Evelyn survived her injury and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Bennett Global nearly collapsed.

Claire refused to hide.

She opened every financial record.

Every secret account.

Every suspicious transaction.

She apologized publicly.

Not because all of it had been her fault.

Because she believed leadership meant accepting responsibility for what happened under her company.

Mason watched the press conference from his living room.

Claire stood behind a podium.

She looked exhausted.

But steady.

“We built systems to protect people,” she said.

“Instead, those systems were used to control them.”

She paused.

“That ends today.”

When the press conference ended, Mason called her.

“You did well.”

“That’s all I get?”

He smiled.

“Very good.”

She laughed.

“How’s Emma?”

“Asking when you’re coming over.”

“Really?”

“She likes you.”

Claire smiled.

“I like her too.”

Mason hesitated.

Then said,

“Come over.”

Claire went silent.

“Is that an invitation?”

“Yes.”

“For dinner?”

“Yes.”

“Just dinner?”

He laughed.

“For now.”

She smiled.

“I’ll be there.”

That evening, she arrived carrying groceries.

Emma ran to the door.

“Claire!”

They hugged.

Mason stood in the kitchen.

“You bought too much.”

“I’ve been told.”

Emma looked at the bags.

“Did you bring dessert?”

“Yes.”

“Then you’re family.”

Mason looked at his daughter.

“Slow down.”

Claire laughed.

Dinner was simple.

Chicken.

Rice.

Vegetables.

Nothing expensive.

Afterward, Emma fell asleep on the couch.

Claire covered her with a blanket.

Mason watched.

“You’re good with her.”

“She makes it easy.”

He nodded.

They stood in the kitchen together.

The room was quiet.

Claire looked at him.

“Do you still think I’m a stranger?”

“No.”

“When did that change?”

He thought.

“At the diner.”

“When I told those men you were with me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“You meant it, didn’t you?”

“I did.”

“Even though you didn’t know me.”

“I knew enough.”

She looked down.

“Mason.”

“What?”

“I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“You.”

He frowned.

“Me?”

“You make me feel safe.”

He waited.

“And I’ve spent my entire life believing safety was something I could buy.”

She looked into his eyes.

“Now I know it isn’t.”

Mason stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She touched his hand.

“Don’t say anything.”

He leaned closer.

She kissed him.

It was soft.

Careful.

The kind of kiss that asked a question before becoming an answer.

When they separated, neither moved.

Then Emma’s sleepy voice came from the couch.

“Are you kissing?”

Mason closed his eyes.

Claire started laughing.

Emma smiled.

“I knew it.”

Mason looked at Claire.

“This is your fault.”

“My fault?”

“You encouraged her.”

“She asked a reasonable question.”

He laughed.

For the first time in years, his house felt full.

Not crowded.

Full.

And that difference mattered.
