“Back Off, She’s With Me!”—Single Dad Ex-SEAL Protected a Stranger Who Was Actually a CEO
Chapter 14
Nathan Reed was living under another name in a small coastal town.
He wasn’t hiding from the police.
He was hiding from his own former organization.
He had spent years collecting evidence against Atlantic.
When Mason and Claire found him, he didn’t run.
He simply sat on the porch and waited.
“You finally came.”
Claire looked at him.
“You knew we’d find you.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Emily trusted Mason.”
Mason stared.
“How did you know her?”
“I recruited her.”
“You?”
Nathan nodded.
“She was the best investigator I ever knew.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You sent her into danger.”
“I sent her to discover the truth.”
“You got her killed.”
Nathan looked down.
“I’ll carry that forever.”
Mason stepped forward.
“Then tell me everything.”
Nathan did.
Atlantic had started as a legal anti-corruption system.
Richard wanted protection from corporate espionage.
Nathan helped build it.
Evelyn expanded it.
Victor weaponized it.
Marcus monetized it.
And Emily discovered all of them.
“She found the exit,” Nathan said.
“What exit?”
“A way to destroy the network without destroying the innocent people trapped inside it.”
Claire frowned.
“We already destroyed Atlantic.”
“Yes.”
“But?”
Nathan handed her a drive.
“There was a backup.”
Mason’s face hardened.
“Where?”
“Bennett headquarters.”
Claire stared.
“My company.”
“Yes.”
“How could it survive?”
“Because Emily never trusted the server.”
Claire looked at Mason.
“Then why didn’t she destroy it?”
Nathan smiled sadly.
“Because she wanted you to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Power or freedom.”
Claire understood.
The backup contained the remaining financial assets.
Millions.
Perhaps billions.
It could restore parts of Bennett Global.
It could rebuild the empire.
Or it could be destroyed permanently.
Mason looked at her.
“You don’t have to choose alone.”
Claire nodded.
They returned to the city.
Inside the old headquarters, they found the hidden server.
The screen displayed two options.
RESTORE
or
ERASE
Claire stood motionless.
Mason took her hand.
“What do you want?”
She looked at him.
“For years, I thought I had to save my father’s company.”
“And now?”
“I think I need to save the people.”
She pressed ERASE.
The screen went black.
Mason smiled.
Claire exhaled.
Then she laughed.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
She leaned into him.
“You know what?”
“What?”
“I don’t miss being a billionaire.”
“You weren’t exactly poor.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“But I was lonely.”
He touched her cheek.
“Not anymore.”
She smiled.
“Not anymore.”
They walked outside.
The sun was setting.
Emma waited beside the truck.
She ran toward them.
“Did you fix everything?”
Claire smiled.
“Yes.”
Emma looked at Mason.
“Are we going home?”
Mason nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire took his hand.
“For the first time,” she whispered, “I actually know where home is.”
