Accountant Sold By Her Stepbrother—Then 3 Mafia Bosses Claimed Her As Their Own
Chapter 4
That night, someone attacked the mansion.
The first gunshot shattered a window.
Clara dropped to the floor.
Luca pulled her behind a marble pillar.
“Stay down.”
More shots echoed outside.
Dante’s security team rushed through the corridors.
Adrian moved toward the back entrance.
Clara’s heart pounded.
“Who are they?”
Luca didn’t answer.
She grabbed his sleeve.
“Who?”
“People who want the ledger.”
She realized immediately.
“They know.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Marcus.”
Clara closed her eyes.
Of course.
Her stepbrother had sold them out.
The attack lasted six minutes.
Then silence.
Luca returned.
“We’re leaving.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere safer.”
“I need my files.”
“Forget the files.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“If those records are destroyed, the money disappears.”
Dante entered.
“She’s right.”
Adrian followed.
“We have another problem.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Clara’s mother.
Alive.
Clara froze.
“My mother died six years ago.”
“That’s what you were told.”
She grabbed the photograph.
“When was this taken?”
“Last week.”
Her hands trembled.
“Where is she?”
“We don’t know.”
Luca looked at Clara.
“This is why your father hid the money.”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“To protect your mother.”
Clara’s mind raced.
Her father had never spoken about criminal organizations.
He had simply told her that her mother was sick.
After his death, her mother had supposedly passed away from complications.
But now there was proof she had survived.
“Why would my father fake her death?”
“Because someone wanted her dead.”
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Clara looked at the three men.
“You know.”
Luca nodded.
“We suspect.”
“Tell me.”
“An organization called Black Meridian.”
Clara had never heard of it.
Dante explained.
“They specialize in financial extortion and corporate manipulation.”
“They’ve been searching for your father’s money for years.”
Adrian added:
“And they believe you know where it is.”
Clara looked down at the ledger.
“Then they will come for me.”
“Yes.”
She took a deep breath.
“Good.”
Dante frowned.
“Good?”
“If they come for me, we can find them.”
Luca smiled.
“That’s dangerous.”
“I know.”
“Why aren’t you afraid?”
Clara looked at him.
“Because I’ve been afraid for twenty years.”
She closed the ledger.
“I’m done.”
The three men exchanged glances.
For the first time, they weren’t protecting a victim.
They were protecting someone who was ready to fight back.
