Accountant Sold By Her Stepbrother—Then 3 Mafia Bosses Claimed Her As Their Own
Chapter 6
The old house looked abandoned.
Marcus had purchased it but never renovated it.
Clara walked through the front door.
Memories hit her immediately.
Her father’s study.
Her mother’s piano.
The staircase where she had learned to count.
She touched the wall.
“This was home.”
Luca followed.
“Where would your father hide $147 million?”
“Somewhere nobody would search.”
Dante opened drawers.
Nothing.
Adrian checked the basement.
Nothing.
Clara walked into the kitchen.
She looked at the old clock.
Her father had always kept it five minutes fast.
She smiled.
Then she noticed something.
The clock was exactly on time.
“That’s wrong.”
She removed it from the wall.
Behind it was a safe.
Dante stared.
“You’re kidding.”
Clara entered a combination.
Her birthday.
Nothing.
Her mother’s birthday.
Nothing.
Then she remembered.
Her father had once told her:
“The first number matters.”
She entered 0814.
The safe opened.
Inside was a key.
And another letter.
Clara opened it.
If you’ve reached this point, you are old enough to know the truth.
She continued reading.
The money was never mine.
Clara frowned.
It belonged to people who were betrayed by the same organization that destroyed our family.
The letter named Black Meridian.
Her father had stolen the money from them.
Not to keep it.
To expose them.
He had divided it into accounts controlled by legitimate businesses and charities.
The money was evidence.
The original records were hidden somewhere else.
Clara looked at the key.
A number was engraved on it.
TABLE 27.
Dante looked at Luca.
“Where?”
Luca knew immediately.
“The old Union Station.”
Clara folded the letter.
“Then that’s where we’re going.”
Suddenly, a noise came from upstairs.
Someone was inside.
Luca raised his weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
Footsteps approached.
Marcus appeared.
He looked exhausted.
“Clara.”
She stared at him.
“You sold me.”
“I was desperate.”
“You sold me.”
“I didn’t know they’d hurt you.”
“Yes, you did.”
Marcus looked at the three men.
“Please.”
Dante grabbed him.
“Where is the rest of the information?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Clara stepped closer.
“You bought this house for a reason.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I found one of Dad’s letters.”
“What did it say?”
“That the money would come back.”
“Where?”
Marcus whispered:
“To the person who could read between the numbers.”
Clara stared.
He wasn’t talking about himself.
He was talking about her.
Then Marcus collapsed.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Someone had shot him from outside.
Clara looked toward the window.
A black car sped away.
She knelt beside her stepbrother.
For the first time, she realized the enemy wasn’t trying to get the money anymore.
They were trying to eliminate everyone who knew where it was.
