Adrian hired a private investigator.
Not to investigate Elena.
To investigate himself.
He asked for everything surrounding the old scandal.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Account records.
Messages.
Every document.
The investigator returned with one sentence.
“Something is wrong.”
Adrian stared at the file.
The account used in the transfer had been created six days before the money moved.
It had been closed three weeks later.
The signature on the transfer order was almost identical to Elena’s.
Almost.
But not quite.
The photograph of Elena meeting Victor had been taken outside a café.
There was no date.
No context.
Then the investigator found the missing piece.
Victor Hale had been negotiating with Adrian’s father at the same time.
Adrian’s father had warned him:
“That woman is destroying you.”
Adrian remembered.
His father had been certain.
Too certain.
Adrian called him.
“I need the original records from ten years ago.”
There was a pause.
“Why?”
“Because I saw Elena.”
Silence.
“What?”
“She has two daughters.”
His father’s voice became cold.
“You need to stay away from her.”
“Why?”
“Because nothing good will come from this.”
Adrian stared at the phone.
“Where are the original files?”
Another silence.
Then:
“I destroyed them.”
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
“You destroyed evidence?”
“I protected the family.”
Adrian hung up.
For the first time, he wondered whether his father had lied to him.
And if he had, what else had he done?
