“Why did you leave Mom?”
Adrian froze.
Elena looked toward him.
He could have lied.

“I thought she had betrayed me.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because I trusted the wrong people.”
Mia frowned.
“That’s sad.”
“Yes.”
Ava looked at him.
“Did you love Mom?”
Adrian glanced at Elena.
“Yes.”
“Do you still?”
Silence.
Elena looked away.
Adrian answered:
“Yes.”
The girls exchanged a glance.
Mia smiled.
“Then maybe you should tell her.”
Elena laughed softly.
“Don’t interfere.”
“We’re helping.”
Adrian smiled.

But later that night, when the girls were asleep, Elena stood with Adrian on the balcony.
“You shouldn’t have answered like that.”
“How should I answer?”
“You could have lied.”
