After landing, Adrian waited near baggage claim.
Elena tried to leave through another exit.
He followed.
“Elena.”
She kept walking.
“I won’t cause a scene.”
She stopped.
“Then go home.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the girls.
“Because they’re my daughters.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“They don’t know you.”
“They should.”
She turned.
“You chose that.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t ask.”
Adrian flinched.
She was right.
He had never asked.
Never investigated.
Never searched for her after she left.
He had assumed she was guilty.
He had allowed his family to convince him that she had betrayed him.
“Where have you been?”
“Canada.”
“What do you do?”
“I own a small design company.”
He stared.
“You built a life.”
“Yes.”
“Without me.”
Elena smiled sadly.
“You told me to leave.”
He had no defense.
One of the girls approached.
“Mom, are we going?”
Elena nodded.
Then she looked at Adrian.
“This is Ava.”
She pointed to the other.
“And this is Mia.”
Adrian looked at them.
Ava studied him.
“You’re famous.”
He almost laughed.
“Apparently.”
Mia asked:
“Do you know Mom?”
Elena answered before he could.
“Years ago.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I know your mother very well.”
The girls didn’t understand.
Elena took their hands.
“Goodbye, Adrian.”
He watched them walk away.
Then his phone rang.
His assistant.
“Sir, you have a board meeting in forty minutes.”
Adrian looked toward the airport doors.
For the first time in ten years, his company was the last thing on his mind.
