Adrian waited until the plane reached cruising altitude.
Then he walked toward Elena.
She was reading a children’s book.
The girls were drawing.
One looked up first.
She stared at him.

Adrian stopped.
Elena’s face changed completely.
She recognized him immediately.
“Adrian.”
He couldn’t speak.
Her eyes hardened.
“Go back to your seat.”
He looked at the girls.
“Are they yours?”
Elena’s hands tightened around the book.
“Yes.”
“How old are they?”
“Nine.”
His heart stopped.
Nine.
The timeline fit.
“They’re mine.”
Elena said nothing.
“Elena.”
The girl by the window looked at him.
“Mom, who is he?”
Elena swallowed.
“Someone I used to know.”
Adrian felt like the floor had disappeared.
“You had my children.”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Tell you what?”
“That I had daughters.”
She stared at him.
“Would you have listened?”
He had no answer.
Because ten years earlier, he hadn’t.
A flight attendant approached.
“Sir, you need to return to your seat.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“I need to talk to you.”
“You’ve had ten years.”
She turned back toward her daughters.
The conversation was over.
But Adrian returned to his seat knowing something had changed forever.
For ten years, he had believed Elena disappeared because she was guilty.
