Chapter 1 

At 10:47 p.m., my phone rang.
It was my boss, Victoria Sterling.
“Daniel, are you still awake?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Good. I need a favor.”
Twenty minutes later, I was standing outside the company’s headquarters, staring at her waiting by the curb.
Victoria Sterling was the youngest executive in our company and the daughter of its founder.
She was intimidating, brilliant, and almost impossible to read.
Tonight, however, she looked exhausted.
She walked toward my car.
“Drive me home.”
I blinked.
“Of course.”
She got into the passenger seat.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then her phone began vibrating repeatedly.
She looked at the screen and sighed.
“My family.”
“Everything okay?”
“No.”
She put the phone away.
“My parents are hosting a family dinner tonight.”
“Tonight?”
“Apparently.”
She looked out the window.
“I forgot.”
I smiled slightly.
“You forgot a family dinner?”
“I’ve been working fourteen hours.”
“Fair enough.”
She suddenly turned toward me.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Do you have plans tomorrow?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She hesitated.
“Because I may need you to do something strange.”
I laughed.
“How strange?”
She looked at me seriously.
“Very.”
I didn’t know it then, but five minutes later, I’d be agreeing to something that would completely change both our lives.
