Daniel Carter had learned to become invisible.
At thirty-four, he worked nights as a janitor at Sterling Technologies, one of the largest software companies in Chicago.
During the day, he was a single father.
At night, he cleaned glass offices where executives discussed multimillion-dollar deals and walked past him without remembering his name.
Daniel didn’t mind.
Invisible meant nobody asked questions.
Nobody asked why he worked two jobs.
Nobody asked why his six-year-old daughter, Lily, sometimes waited in the employee lounge after school.
And nobody asked why a man with a college degree was pushing a mop through hallways at midnight.
Daniel had once worked in corporate finance.
Then his wife died.
Everything changed.
Lily was two years old.
Daniel quit his job, sold almost everything they owned, and spent the next several years doing whatever work allowed him to be present for his daughter.
Cleaning offices paid less than finance.
But it came with predictable hours.
Predictable hours meant dinner together.
Homework together.
Bedtime stories.
For Daniel, that was worth more than a title.
One Thursday afternoon, Lily sat at the employee lounge table drawing while Daniel finished his shift.
“Look, Dad.”
She held up a picture.
It showed three stick figures standing beside a large yellow sun.
“That’s you.”
She pointed to the tallest figure.
“That’s me.”
She pointed to a smaller one.
“And that’s Mom.”
Daniel smiled.
“I like it.”
“Can we put it in the kitchen?”
“Of course.”
Lily leaned closer.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Are we still going to Grandma’s Sunday?”
“Absolutely.”
She smiled.
Daniel packed his cleaning supplies.
He didn’t notice the black SUV parked outside the loading entrance.
He didn’t notice the woman sitting behind the tinted windows.
And he certainly didn’t know that the next morning, the most powerful executive in the company would step into that SUV with his daughter.
