She Thought She Was Saving a Homeless Old Man — Then She Discovered Why He Had Chosen Her

CHAPTER 1

Emily Carter counted the money twice.

Twenty dollars.

That was everything.

She needed groceries. Her rent was due in four days. And that afternoon, her manager had cut her shift because the café was “overstaffed.”

Emily had smiled when he told her.

She had learned to smile when she was scared.

By the time she left work, rain was falling hard enough to turn the sidewalks into mirrors.

She pulled her coat tighter and started walking home.

That was when she saw him.

An old man was lying beneath the broken awning of an abandoned pharmacy.

His clothes were soaked through.

His shoes were torn.

One hand was pressed against his chest.

People walked past him without looking.

Emily stopped.

“Sir?”

The old man didn’t answer.

She crouched beside him.

“Are you okay?”

His eyes opened.

For a moment, they were surprisingly clear.

“Go home,” he whispered.

Emily frowned.

“Excuse me?”

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Then he tried to stand.

His knees buckled.

Emily caught him before his head hit the pavement.

“Someone call an ambulance!”

Within minutes, sirens filled the street.

The paramedics arrived and examined him.

“He needs to go to the hospital.”

The old man’s hand suddenly tightened around Emily’s wrist.

“No.”

“You need medical attention,” the paramedic said.

“No hospital.”

“Why?”

The man’s eyes moved toward the street.

A black SUV sat across the road.

Its headlights were off.

“They’ll find me.”

Emily looked at the SUV.

“Who?”

The old man didn’t answer.

The paramedics eventually left after he refused transport.

Emily remained beside him.

She knew she should walk away.

She knew she couldn’t afford another expense.

But she couldn’t leave him there.

So she took him to a cheap motel three blocks away.

At the front desk, she paid with her last twenty dollars.

The old man stared at her.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

“I know.”

“You need the money.”

Emily smiled weakly.

“I know that too.”

“What if I can’t repay you?”

“Then don’t.”

The old man studied her face.

Something changed in his expression.

Almost recognition.

“What is your name?”

“Emily.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Emily what?”

“Carter.”

The old man’s face went pale.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Laura’s daughter.”

Emily froze.

“How do you know my mother’s name?”

The old man looked away.

And Emily suddenly realized she had just brought a complete stranger into her life.

A stranger who knew something about her dead mother.

Something he clearly did not want to explain.
