Arthur took Emily to his private residence.
She almost refused.
Then she saw the security guards.
The cameras.
The locked gates.
This wasn’t a home.
It was a fortress.
Inside, Arthur finally told her the truth he had spent years hiding.
He had deliberately disappeared.
Someone inside Reed Meridian had been moving company assets through shell corporations.
Millions of dollars were missing.
Then board members began dying.
One disappeared.
Another suffered a suspicious car accident.
Arthur realized someone was preparing to take control of the company.
So he vanished.
He wanted his enemies to believe he was vulnerable.
Emily listened silently.
“And my mother?”
Arthur looked down.
“Laura discovered the first part of the scheme.”
“What did she find?”
“Evidence that executives were stealing money and using the company to hide illegal transactions.”
“Did she know who was responsible?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Arthur hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“Then why did my mother trust you?”
Arthur looked at her.
“She didn’t.”
Emily frowned.
“What?”
“She trusted me enough to ask me to protect you.”
Arthur walked to a locked cabinet.
He opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Most were labeled with dates.
One had Emily’s name.
She stared at it.
“You’ve been investigating me?”
“For seventeen years.”
“Why?”
“Because I promised your mother.”
Emily picked up the file.
Photographs.
School records.
Addresses.
Newspaper clippings.
Everything.
“You watched me?”
“I watched from a distance.”
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?”
“No.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I never knew whether coming into your life would protect you or destroy you.”
Emily looked at the file.
Then she noticed something.
A photograph of her mother.
On the back were handwritten words.
If Arthur finds Emily, tell her I never abandoned her.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She knew you’d find me.”
Arthur nodded.
“She hoped I would.”
Emily turned away.
For the first time, she wondered if the story she had been told about her mother’s death had been a lie from the beginning.
Then Arthur suddenly gripped the edge of the table.
His face went white.
“Arthur?”
He collapsed.
