She Thought She Was Saving a Homeless Old Man — Then She Discovered Why He Had Chosen Her
CHAPTER 8
Emily escaped through the back door.
Arthur’s security team arrived minutes later.
They searched the apartment.
Nobody was there.
But something had changed.
A childhood photograph had been moved.
Emily stared at it.
Her mother was holding her.
Around Laura’s neck was a small silver necklace.
The same necklace Emily had worn every day since she was eight.
Emily touched it.
“Wait.”
Arthur looked at her.
“What?”
“My mother gave this to me the night before she died.”
Arthur’s expression changed.
“Let me see it.”
Emily removed it.
Arthur examined the pendant.
“There is a seam.”
He pressed his thumb against it.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
Emily stared.
“How did we never see this?”
Arthur’s hands trembled.
A miniature storage device was hidden inside.
They connected it to a computer.
Files appeared.
Financial records.
Bank transfers.
Encrypted documents.
Names.
Dates.
Companies.
Arthur’s face hardened.
“These aren’t just stolen funds.”
“What are they?”
“Payments.”
“To whom?”
Arthur scrolled.
His expression became darker.
“These are payments made to people who helped remove witnesses.”
Emily felt sick.
Then a video opened.
Laura appeared on screen.
She looked tired.
Terrified.
But determined.
“If you’re watching this, I failed to keep you away from the truth.”
Emily whispered:
“Mom…”
Laura continued.
“I need you to know that I didn’t die because of an accident.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Laura looked directly into the camera.
“The person who betrayed me has been close to Arthur for years.”
A pause.
“But he isn’t acting alone.”
The screen went black.
Then another file opened.
A list of names.
At the bottom was one word:
MERIDIAN.
Arthur stared at it.
“This goes higher than the board.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then where does it end?”
Arthur didn’t answer.
Because one of the names on the list had just appeared.
Victor Hale.
