The doctors said Arthur was lucky.
Someone had poisoned his drink.
The amount was small enough that he survived.
Large enough to send a message.
Emily sat outside his hospital room.
She couldn’t stop thinking.
Someone had found Arthur.
Someone had poisoned him.
And whoever it was knew she was involved.
A man entered the hallway.
Tall.
Handsome.
Early thirties.
He wore a dark suit and carried himself with quiet confidence.
“Emily Carter?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Daniel Reed.”
Arthur’s son.
Emily immediately felt uncomfortable.
Daniel sat beside her.
“My father shouldn’t have involved you.”
“You knew about me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“My father has been looking for you for years.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you know about my mother?”
Daniel hesitated.
“More than I should.”
The words made Emily’s pulse jump.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Your mother was investigating my father’s company.”
“I know.”
“She discovered something dangerous.”
“What?”
Daniel looked toward the hospital room.
“People think my father is a difficult man. Arrogant. Ruthless.”
“Is he?”
“Sometimes.”
“Did he kill my mother?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer.
Emily stood.
“You know.”
“I know enough to tell you that you shouldn’t trust everyone around my father.”
“Does that include you?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Especially me.”
He walked away.
Emily watched him disappear down the corridor.
That night, Arthur woke.
His first words were:
“Where is Daniel?”
Emily stared.
“Why?”
Arthur’s expression became serious.
“Because if he knows you’re here…”
He stopped.
“What?”
Arthur looked at her.
“Then the person who poisoned me knows too.”
