The final video opened automatically.
Laura appeared again.
This time, she was smiling.
Not frightened.
Not exhausted.
Just a mother looking at her daughter.
“Emily.”
Emily couldn’t breathe.
“If you’re watching this, then you’ve already discovered the truth.”
Laura smiled.
“I wish I could have been there to tell you myself.”
Emily cried silently.
“There is one thing I didn’t tell Arthur.”
Arthur looked at the screen.
Laura continued.
“I knew Victor was watching me.”
“I knew he was stealing from the company.”
“And I knew he would eventually come for me.”
She paused.
“So I created a second plan.”
Arthur leaned closer.
Laura smiled.
“I asked Arthur to search for Emily.”
Emily stared.
“But I also asked him not to give her anything.”
“Not money.”
“Not power.”
“Not my place in his family.”
“Nothing.”
Laura’s voice softened.
“I wanted to know whether my daughter would grow into the kind of woman who helped people when she had nothing to give.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Laura continued.
“And if you are watching this, I already know the answer.”
A small smile appeared.
“You gave away your last twenty dollars.”
Arthur looked at Emily.
She laughed through her tears.
Laura’s final words were almost a whisper.
“That was the moment I knew you were safe.”
The video ended.
Emily stared at the black screen.
Then she noticed something.
A final file had appeared.
A document.
Inheritance Directive.
Arthur looked at it.
His face went pale.
“What is that?”
Emily opened it.
Arthur had arranged for her to inherit a controlling interest in Reed Meridian.
Emily immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Arthur smiled.
“Your mother was right.”
“What?”
“You shouldn’t accept it because you’re her daughter.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then why?”
“Because you became the person she hoped you would become.”
Emily closed the document.
“I don’t want your company.”
Arthur looked surprised.
“I want the foundation.”
“The foundation?”
“To help people who have nowhere to go.”
Arthur smiled.
“Then it’s yours.”
But there was one final mystery.
Emily looked at the last line of Laura’s letter.
There is still one person you have not met.
She looked at Arthur.
“Who did my mother mean?”
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
