Waitress Said, “Sir, My Mother Has a Ring Like Yours” — The Billionaire Froze When He Heard It
Chapter 4
Lena sat on the bedroom floor for nearly ten minutes without speaking.
Daniel didn’t know what to say.
He had spent his entire life believing his family was complicated but ordinary.
His father had been strict.
His mother had been protective.
There had been no siblings.
No hidden children.
No secret family.
Yet now a woman he had met less than two hours earlier had become the sister he never knew existed.
Lena looked at him.
“Why would my mother hide this?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“Why would your father?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he know?”
Daniel looked at the birth certificate.
The signature was unmistakable.
Richard Whitmore.
“Yes.”
Lena wiped her eyes.
“He knew.”
Daniel nodded.
“And he never told me.”
She stood.
“Then there has to be a reason.”
Daniel agreed.
They searched the office.
Behind a cabinet, they found a locked drawer.
Daniel recognized the lock.
It was the same type his father had used in his private office.
He called his lawyer.
The drawer was eventually opened.
Inside were letters.
Dozens.
Most were from Richard.
Some were from Evelyn.
Daniel picked up the first.
It was dated thirty-five years earlier.
Evelyn,
I will come back. I promise.
Another letter.
I cannot abandon Daniel. But I cannot abandon you either.
Another.
They will destroy everything if they discover Lena exists.
Daniel stopped.
“Who?”
Lena looked over his shoulder.
The next letter answered the question.
My father knows. He says Lena cannot inherit anything. He says the company belongs to the Whitmore bloodline through Daniel.
Daniel frowned.
“His father?”
Richard’s father had been William Whitmore.
The founder of the family empire.
A ruthless businessman.
Daniel remembered stories about him.
He had died before Daniel turned ten.
Daniel read further.
William threatened Evelyn. He told her that if she tried to reveal Lena’s identity, he would take Daniel away too.
Lena covered her mouth.
“So my grandfather knew about me?”
“Yes.”
“And he threatened my mother?”
Daniel nodded.
Then he found another letter.
This one was from Evelyn.
Richard,
I don’t care about the money. I only want my daughter to know where she came from.
Daniel’s throat tightened.
Another letter.
You told me Lena would receive her share one day. I trusted you.
Daniel looked at the dates.
The letters continued for years.
Richard promised to reveal Lena’s identity.
But he never did.
Then, twenty-two years ago, the letters stopped.
The final letter was from Richard.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, I failed. They know about us.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Who knew?”
Lena looked at him.
Daniel kept reading.
They have threatened to destroy the company and harm everyone connected to us. I have placed evidence somewhere they will never look. The rings are the key.
Daniel immediately looked at his ring.
Lena looked at the photograph.
Two identical rings.
The key.
“To what?” she whispered.
Daniel didn’t know.
Then he noticed something engraved inside his ring.
He had never paid attention.
A tiny number.
314.
Lena checked her mother’s photograph.
Her mother’s ring showed the same number.
Daniel suddenly remembered something from childhood.
His father had a safe in the old family mansion.
The combination had been 3-1-4.
Daniel stood.
“We need to go to my father’s house.”
Lena hesitated.
“Is anyone living there?”
“No.”
Daniel had inherited the mansion after his father’s death but rarely visited.
The property had been empty for years.
They drove there before dawn.
The house stood on a hill overlooking the city.
Daniel entered using his key.
Dust covered the furniture.
He walked directly to his father’s study.
Behind a painting was a safe.
He entered 314.
The door opened.
Inside was a small wooden box.
Daniel lifted it.
There were two compartments.
One held a blue-stoned ring.
The other contained a letter.
Daniel opened it.
Daniel,
If you ever discover Lena, you must know that I did not abandon her willingly.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
Then he read the next line.
I was forced to choose between protecting my children and exposing the people who controlled my father’s empire.
Daniel looked at Lena.
“What people?”
Before he could continue, the house alarm suddenly activated.
Someone had entered the mansion.
And they knew exactly where Daniel was.
