Waitress Said, “Sir, My Mother Has a Ring Like Yours” — The Billionaire Froze When He Heard It
Chapter 5
Security rushed through the hallway.
Daniel and Lena remained inside the study.
The alarm continued screaming.
Then the electricity went out.
Darkness swallowed the house.
“Stay behind me,” Daniel whispered.
Lena nodded.
Footsteps echoed downstairs.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone wasn’t trying to hide.
They wanted Daniel to know they were there.
His security chief whispered through his earpiece.
“Three intruders.”
Daniel frowned.
“How did they get in?”
“We’re checking.”
Then the footsteps stopped.
A man’s voice came from downstairs.
“Daniel.”
Daniel recognized it.
His father’s former attorney.
Marcus Hale.
Daniel stepped toward the staircase.
“What are you doing here?”
Marcus laughed.
“You found the box.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“How do you know?”
“Because your father told me where it was.”
“Where is my father?”
Marcus became silent.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“He’s dead.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To finish what he couldn’t.”
Lena whispered:
“Who is he?”
Daniel answered:
“Someone who worked for my family.”
Marcus shouted:
“You don’t understand what your father did!”
Daniel stepped closer.
“My father hid my sister.”
“He protected her.”
“From whom?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel demanded:
“Who?”
Then Marcus said something that made Daniel freeze.
“From your grandfather.”
William Whitmore.
Dead for decades.
Daniel stared.
“My grandfather?”
“He built the empire on secrets.”
Marcus explained that William had secretly controlled a network of companies through shell corporations.
He had manipulated competitors.
Destroyed rivals.
Bought politicians.
And buried scandals.
Richard discovered the truth.
He wanted to expose it.
But William threatened his children.
Daniel had been protected by the family name.
Lena had been hidden because William considered her a weakness.
Richard tried to fight back.
But before he could expose the network, he died.
Officially, it was a heart attack.
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“It wasn’t.”
Daniel felt cold.
“My father was murdered?”
Marcus nodded.
“Your grandfather’s people arranged it.”
“But my grandfather was already dead.”
“His organization survived him.”
Daniel understood.
The family empire had not been controlled by one man.
It was an inherited machine.
And someone still controlled it.
“Who?” Daniel asked.
Marcus looked at Lena.
“Her mother knows.”
Lena stepped forward.
“Where is she?”
“Alive.”
Daniel stared.
“You kidnapped her?”
“No.”
Marcus shook his head.
“She was taken by the people who have been watching you.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“Where?”
Marcus handed him a piece of paper.
An address.
Then the lights suddenly returned.
Security rushed downstairs.
The intruders were gone.
Marcus had disappeared too.
Daniel looked at the paper.
It led to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.
They went immediately.
Inside, they found Evelyn.
She was tied to a chair.
Alive.
Lena ran to her.
“Mom!”
Evelyn began crying.
Daniel stood nearby.
Evelyn looked at him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she whispered:
“You have Richard’s eyes.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Your entire life.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
Evelyn looked at Lena.
“Because your father begged me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because the people watching us would have killed you.”
Daniel looked at Lena.
“And her?”
“They were already looking for her.”
Evelyn reached into her coat.
She pulled out a second photograph.
It showed two babies.
Daniel.
And Lena.
Together.
On the back was written:
The Whitmore heirs.
Daniel stared at it.
“Why did they care about us?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because your father discovered something your grandfather had hidden.”
“What?”
“A trust.”
Daniel frowned.
“What trust?”
“Your grandfather secretly created a second fortune.”
Daniel stared.
“How much?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Over twelve billion dollars.”
Silence.
“And it wasn’t meant for your grandfather’s empire.”
Daniel asked:
“Who was it for?”
Evelyn looked at both of them.
“You.”
“And Lena.”
