Waitress Said, “Sir, My Mother Has a Ring Like Yours” — The Billionaire Froze When He Heard It
Chapter 2
Lena could tell something had changed.
The billionaire who had been sitting quietly over his coffee was no longer looking at her like a waitress.
He was looking at her like someone from a forgotten part of his life.
“Sir?”
Daniel looked up.
“I’m sorry.”
“Are you okay?”
He nodded.
“I need to ask you something.”
Lena waited.
“Does your mother know about this hotel?”
She frowned.
“No.”
“Has she ever mentioned the Whitmore family?”
Lena’s expression tightened.
“Why?”
Daniel leaned back.
“My father founded this hotel.”
Lena stared at him.
“He was named Richard Whitmore.”
Her lips parted.
“My mother knows that name.”
Daniel’s pulse accelerated.
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“Ask her.”
“She doesn’t like talking about him.”
“Richard?”
Lena nodded.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Why?”
“My mother says some people are better left in the past.”
Daniel looked at the ring.
“My father said exactly the same thing.”
Lena stared at him.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Then Daniel asked:
“How old is your mother?”
“Fifty-eight.”
Daniel calculated.
That would have made her twenty-six when he was born.
The timeline fit.
Too perfectly.
Daniel remembered his childhood.
His father had always been distant whenever anyone mentioned the years before his marriage.
There had been one particular photograph that had disappeared from the family home.
Daniel had once asked about it.
His father had simply said:
“That chapter is over.”
Daniel had never understood.
Now he wondered whether the chapter had never actually ended.
“Can I meet your mother?”
Lena looked uncomfortable.
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t think she’ll agree.”
“Tell her my name.”
“What should I say?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Tell her Daniel Whitmore wants to see her.”
Lena’s eyes widened.
“Your name is Daniel Whitmore?”
“Yes.”
She stepped backward.
“My mother told me that name once.”
Daniel felt a strange pressure in his chest.
“What exactly did she say?”
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t remember.”
“Try.”
“She said…”
Lena looked toward the kitchen.
Then whispered:
“If I ever meet a Whitmore, I should leave.”
Daniel went completely still.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did she say anything else?”
“She said your family took something from her.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“My family?”
Lena nodded.
Then she looked at his ring.
“And she said one day someone would come looking for this.”
Daniel slowly removed the ring again.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Lena’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
“Mum.”
Daniel’s heart raced.
Lena answered.
“Hi, Mum.”
She listened.
Then her face changed.
“What?”
Daniel watched her.
Lena turned away.
“I’ll be home soon.”
She hung up.
“What happened?”
“My mother wants me home.”
“Why?”
“She heard your name.”
Daniel stood.
“Did you tell her?”
“No.”
Lena looked terrified.
“She asked me if the man at my table was wearing a blue stone ring.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What did you say?”
“I said yes.”
Lena’s voice trembled.
“My mother told me not to come home alone.”
Daniel immediately called his security team.
“Two cars.”
Lena shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
“What?”
“She sounded afraid.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Afraid of me?”
“No.”
Lena swallowed.
“Afraid of what you might find.”
Daniel didn’t move.
Then the restaurant lights flickered.
A waiter looked toward the ceiling.
The pianist stopped playing.
For several seconds, the restaurant was completely silent.
Then Daniel noticed a man standing outside in the rain.
He wasn’t eating.
He wasn’t entering.
He was simply watching the restaurant.
Daniel’s security officer approached.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Daniel nodded toward the window.
“Do you know him?”
The security officer looked.
The man turned away.
“We’ll check.”
Lena grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“That’s him.”
“Who?”
“The man my mother told me to stay away from.”
Daniel looked toward the street.
The man was already walking away.
Daniel’s security team rushed outside.
But he was gone.
Lena looked at Daniel.
“What is happening?”
Daniel stared at the empty street.
“I don’t know.”
Then he looked down at the ring in his hand.
“But I intend to find out.”
